PREFACE TO VOL. II.

THE present volume completes the Catalogue of Printed

Books contained in the Library of the MASSACHUSETTS HISTORICAL SOCIETY, on the 1st of January, 1859, together with such additions as could be made in the course of the printing.

The whole number of bound volumes in the Library of the Society, at the present time, is 14,048 comprising 8,621 volumes of Printed Books and 427 of Manuscripts in the general Library, and 5,000 volumes in the Dowse Library. The unbound Manuscripts have not been enumerated. The number of Pamphlets unbound is upwards of 15,000.

A complete Index-Catalogue of the valuable Manuscripts in the possession of the Society is already in preparation, and will be published hereafter, together with a description of the Maps and Charts in the Library, and a list of the Portraits and other articles comprised in the Cabinet.

Among the Manuscripts belonging to the Society are the following Collections:

1. THE TRUMBULL PAPERS. Contained in twenty-three folio volumes, illustrating our Colonial and Revolutionary history, collected and preserved by Gov. Jonathan Trumbull, of Connecticut; containing his Correspondence with Washington, Schuyler, Gates, Greene, Hancock, Putnam, De la
