passed on the eighth day of April last, to protect the infant settlements beyond the river Allegheny and to promote the general defence of the frontiers.

[Section IV.] (Section IV. P. L.) And be it further enacted by the authority aforesaid, That a sum not exceeding fifty thousand dollars be appropriated, as well to discharge the expenses already incurred in maintaining a party of militia at Fort Mifflin, on Mud Island aforesaid, as to accomplish the objects of this law and to provide the necessary arms, ammunition and provision for the companies hereby authorized to be raised, which sum shall be payable out of the aggregate fund, upon the warrants of the governor; and account of the disbursements thereof shall be laid by the governor before the general assembly at the next ensuing session.

CHAPTER MDCCXVI.

A SUPPLEMENT TO THE ACT ENTITLED "AN ACT TO PROVIDE FOR THE SUPPORT OF THE GOVERNMENT OF THIS COMMONWEALTH,"2 PASSED THE THIRTEENTH DAY OF APRIL, IN THE YEAR OF OUR LORD ONE THOUSAND SEVEN HUNDRED AND NINETY-ONE.

Whereas it appears from a memorial and statement presented to the legislature of this commonwealth by the surveyorgeneral, the receiver-general and the secretary of the landoffice of the commonwealth, aforesaid, that from the increase of business in the said office, the sums already appropriated by the aforesaid recited act, for the purpose of clerk hire, hath been found insufficient for that purpose. Therefore:

[Section I.] (Section I. P. L.) Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, in General Assembly met, and it is hereby enacted by the authority of the same, That the surveyor-general, the receiver-general and the secretary of the land-office, aforesaid, are hereby entitled to receive of this commonwealth, respectively, for additional clerk hire, the further sum of five hundred dollars for one year to expedite the public business of said office.

CHAPTER MDCCXVII.

AN ACT FOR THE RELIEF OF BLACKALL WILLIAM BALL.

Whereas it has been represented to the legislature by Blackall William Ball, a lieutenant in the late Pennsylvania line, that he has lost a certificate, number ninety-four, for the sum of two hundred and twenty pounds, twelve shillings and seven pence, given to him for the depreciation of his pay; and whereas an act was passed on the sixth day of April, one thousand seven hundred and ninety-one, to enable him to receive the interest on the same, but no provision was therein made for the principal sum aforesaid. Therefore:

[Section I.] (Section I. P. L.) Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, in General Assembly met, and it is hereby enacted by the authority of the same, That Blackall William Ball, a lieutenant in the late Pensylvania line, shall, on the first day of March, one thousand seven hundred and ninety-five, be entitled to receive in specie from the treasurer of this commonwealth, the amount of the principal of a certificate, number ninety-four, issued to the said Blackall William Ball for the sum of two hundred and twenty pounds, twelve shillings and seven pence, the depreciation of his pay; and the treasurer, for the time be

ing, is hereby authorized and directed to pay the sum aforesaid to the said Blackall William Ball, out of the funds which may then be appropriated to discharge claims of the same nature; provided that the said certificate shall not, on the first. day of January, one thousand seven hundred and ninety-five, be redeemed in any manner whatever by the state, nor have been subscribed to the loan of the United States.

And be it further enacted by the authority aforesaid, That the act entitled "An act for the relief of Blackall William Ball," passed on the sixth day of April, one thousand seven hundred and ninety-one, shall, from and after the first day of March, one thousand seven hundred and ninety-five, be repealed and made null and void.

CHAPTER MDCCXVIII.

AN ACT FOR THE RELIEF OF THOMAS BUTLER AND HENRY BROWN.

Whereas it appears by a memorial from Thomas Butler that he has lost a new loan certificate, number two thousand three hundred and fifty, for eighty-seven pounds fifteen shillings, granted him for personal services performed during the late war, and by a memorial from Henry Brown that he has lost a similar certificate, number three thousand six hundred and forty-five, for fifty dollars, granted him for like services; and whereas it appears by a certificate from the comptroller-general that said certificates have not been redeemed nor re-exchanged for continental certificates by this state. Therefore:

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, in General Assembly met, and it is hereby enacted by the authority of the same, That the comptroller-general be, and he is hereby, directed to deliver to the state treasurer the con

And be it further enacted by the authority aforesaid, That the governor be, and he is hereby, authorized and empowered to draw a warrant or warrants on the state treasurer for any sum not exceeding one thousand dollars, for the purpose of carrying this act into effect, to be paid out of the funds appropriated for the support of govern

ment.

CHAPTER MDCCXX.

A SUPPLEMENT TO THE ACT ENTITLED "AN ACT TO ENABLE THE GOVERNOR OF THIS COMMONWEALTH TO INCORPORATE A COMPANY FOR OPENING A CANAL AND LOCK NAVIGATION ON THE WATERS OF BRANDYWINE CREEK."1

Whereas by the first section of the act entitled "An act to enable the governor of this commonwealth to incorporate a company for opening a canal and lock navigation on the waters of Brandywine creek," passed the tenth day of April last, the commissioners therein named were required to procure a book or books and open the same to receive subscriptions for shares of stock in the said company, in the manner and at the times in the said act mentioned; but the legislature of the state of Delaware not having passed a law at that time, enabling the Subscribers to extend the said canal navigation from the place where the same shall intersect the line dividing this state from the state of Delaware, in and through the same state, into the tide waters of the river Delaware, the said commissioners could not, by reason of the provision contained in the twenty-first section of the said act, open the said book or books within the time by the said recited act limited. And whereas the legislature of the state of Delaware have since passed a law for the purposes aforesaid.
