CHAPTER I.

INTRODUCTION.

General Reflections on contemplating the Sea-The Mediterranean-Interest attaching to its Shores.

THERE are few persons who can remain unmoved and unreflecting, as they stand alone upon the shore in presence of the mighty ocean. No matter the aspect it may wear the shadows that are cast upon it;—no matter whether tossing in huge billows, which break hoarsely on the resounding rocks-rolling with snowy crest upon the gravelly beach, or dancing with a gentle ripple on the sand at our feet-the effect is ever the same. As we gaze upon the vast expanse, our imagination shapes out a host of incidents from the mist and spray which rise from off the waters; the wreck-the chasethe fight-the hurricane crowd thickly on our mind's eye, without order or connexion, and we almost believe that voices cry aloud in that deep, incessant roar, and proclaim the secrets of the mighty ocean.

More sober thoughts may reject such fanciful pictures,
