"This is a most interesting work. None knew better than the late Mr. Charles Wild how to select and delineate the beauties of Gothic Architecture."

This exquisite work has called forth the admiration of all lovers of the fine arts. It was got up without limit to expense, by a well known traveller of taste, and is thought by engravers to be the finest work of Acenery ever produced in this country. Owing to the demise of the author, it has been for some time locked up from the public, and had become so scarce a book as scarcely to be known in the trade. It completes the sceneries of Capt. Batty, Cockburn, and Mr. Brockedon, and is the only pretty set of Views in Greece pablished in this country.
"Well entitled is Mr. Williams to call these views select; for they are so in every fine and high sense of the word. The choice of subjects, the exquisite beauty of the execution, and above all, the poetical feeling displayed, render them truly fascinating. Art seems to be carried here to its highest extent."

dards of writing; the exact measure of what should and what should not be said, and of what was necessary to be known, was never comprehended in more clear diction, or more elegant style. The pomp of the buildings has not a nobler air than the simplicity of the narration."-Horace Walpole.
On Wood's monument at Richmoud are these words. "The beautiful editions of Balbec and Palmyra, illus. trated by the classic pen of Robert Wood, supply a nobler and more lasting monument, and will survive those august remains."
"Of all the antiquities that have been communicated to the world; of all the remains of ancient monuments brought from the East, none can be compared with the ruins of Palmyra and of Balbec; not only on account of their stupendous magnificence, but for the extraordinary diligence of those gentlemen who have favoured the public with this view of them, and the accuracy and elegance of the designs. One of the most splendid works ever published, and Brunschweick, das nuwe Distilierbuoch
its accuracy is equal to its beanty. Succeeding travellers are all indebted more or less to Wood's delineations and descriptions; Burckhardt, in particular, in his Travels in Syria, says that Wood's work renders any other description of Balbec unnecessary.
"Of all the works that distinguish this age, noue perhaps excel those beautiful editions of Balbec and Palmyra-not published at the command of a Louis Quatorze, or at the expense of a cardinal nephew, but undertaken by private curiosity and good sense, and trusted to the taste of a polished nation. First edition with a date, not mentioned by Panzer, neither does it appear to be in the collection of Earl Spencer.-In Vol. 3 of the Bibliotheca Spenceriana will be found an analysis of this extraordinary work, "of which the moral or object in view seems to be, the inculcating of a system of law, or a knowledge of the rules of evidence, &c. for those destined for the legal profession. The machinery employed for the elucidation of the moral, or the conveyance of legal instruction, is sufficiently novel and daring. represents Lucifer, and Moses our Saviour, etc." It has been conjectured from points of similarity between the two works, that Milton was not unacquainted with this book when he wrote his Paradise Lost.
