Like most similar productions of the ancient Icelanders, this Chronicle carefully preserves the remembrance of every remarkable event that happened among their neighbours, the Norwegians, Danes, Swedes, Greenlanders, and others. Its peculiar value, however, consists in the very curious and circumstantial account which it gives of the STATE OF IRELAND IN THE ELEVENTH CENTURY-its Saints and their Miracles-and the manners and customs of the inhabitants.

"All preceding collections of Northern Antiquities were exceeded equally in splendour, utility, and extent, by the meritorious labours of LANGEBEK, whose collection has now become a work of uncommon Occurrence. The editor was doubtless the Bouquet

of Denmark. It is said that the present venerable and
learned Dr. Thorkelin, principal librarian of the Royal
Library at Copenhagen, seldom pronounces the name
of Langebek, without passing his hand across his eyes,
or placing it on his heart This is as it should be."
