[Gerarde's "Herbal" is praised and repeatedly quoted by Sir James Smith in his "English Flora," Dr. G. Johnson in the preface to the " Berwick Flora," and by many other authors of acknowledged position. Some of the medicinal compounds mentioned by Gerarde, though for a time discarded, have again come into use, and the book is consequently of considerable practical value. The following prices have been realised during this present year: Ed. 1636, folio, £2 16s. (half calf, title mounted); Ed. 1597, folio, 11 5s. (old calf gilt); Ed. 1633, folio, £3 5s.
