etc.

First Edition of Bp. Coverdale's Translation of the New Testament, from the Latin Vulgate, the former one printed with the Old Testament in the year 1535, being made from the original Greek. The translator was most desirous to render it as close as possible, and his anxiety gave rise to some singular expressions, e. g. Matthew xxvi. fol. 40. "That in thys nyght before the Cock Synge thou shalt denye me." Rhomanos xv. fol. 220. "Lest I shulde buylde uppon another man's fundamente,' For the blunders of the printer he remonstrated with Nicolson, and probably desired the copies bearing his name to be called in. Nicolson perhaps complied with the letter of his desire but not with the spirit of it; for he instantly put to press another edition exactly in the same form and type, only substituting the name of " Johan Hollybushe" for that of Coverdale, in the title, but still retaining Coverdale's name at the end of the dedication. The six preliminary leaves, a portion of the first leaf in Matthew, and the last leaf of Table are supplied in admirable facsimile. In other respects this is a perfect copy of one of the rarest books in the English language.
