834 STIER'S (R.) The Words of the LORD JESUS, translated from the best German Edition by the Rev. W. B. Pope. 8 vols. 8vo. cloth, £2. 18s

1855-8

This is perhaps THE MOST EXTENSIVELY IILUSTRATED COPY of Strutt's work in existence: and must have cost an enormous sum and occupied many years in collecting.

The contents of its most interesting assemblage of Engravings would require a volume to describe in detail. It comprises about FIVE THOU SAND SELECTED SPECIMENS of the works of various Masters, with their Portraits and other illustrative Prints. The remark of a late distinguished amateur in respect to a copy of Bryan's Dictionary is so strictly applicable that we do not hesitate to transcribe it. "I consider no description of work more legitimately a subject for illustration. The plates so employed and placed opposite to the memoirs of the several artists materially aid the effect of the descriptions, and imprint the character of their productions more forcibly upon the mind than can possibly be done by words."

This magnificent book appeared in one of Messrs. Longman's Cata

logues a few years since, priced £210.
