HE Christian's life on earth, it is important always to recollect, is a state of constant warfare. Whoever is admitted into the Christian Church by baptism is thereby enrolled as a soldier in Christ's army. He is pledged "manfully to fight, under Christ's banner, the good fight of faith, and to continue His faithful soldier and servant unto his life's end." Between A the powers of evil and the powers of good there is a ceaseless struggle going on; so that in reality this earth is one wide battle-field, in which the contending hosts are always striving for the mastery. In that struggle every individual is bound to take a personal and active interest, and on the result of it, as it affects each combatant, the most momentous issues depend. The struggle commenced when the tempter prevailed by subtlety against our first parents, and it has ever since been waged with varying success on either side. The Captain of our salvation Himself took part in it when the same adversary assailed Him in the wilderness; and it will not cease until the promised day comes when all that opposes itself to His government has been subdued finally and for ever, and |
