Holy joy, our souls possessing,

Swells the tribute of our praise.
2 Glory to th' almighty Father,

Fountain of eternal love,
Who, his wandering sheep to gather,

Sent a Saviour from above. mf 3 To

the Son all praise be given,

Who, with love unknown before,
Left the bright abode of heaven,

And our sins and sorrows bore.
4 Equal strains of warm devotion

Let the Spirit's praise employ;
Author of each pure emotion, -

Source of wisdom, peace, and joy.
õ Thus-our joyful hearts ascending,

Glorify Jehovah's name;
Heavenly songs with ours are blending -

There, the theme is still the same.

HYMN 280, S. M. 230

The Father, Son and Holy Ghost. mf i WHILE all the angel throng

Give thanks to God on high, f

Let earth repeat the joyful song,

And echo to the sky.
2 Father! in whom we live,

In whom we are and move,
mif The glory, power and praise receive

Of thine eternal love. 3 Incarnate Deity !

Let all the ransomed race mf

Render in thanks their lives to thee,

For thy redeeming grace. 4 Spirit of holiness!

Let all thy saints adore mf Thy sacred energy, and bless

Thy heart-renewing power.
5 Eternal, glorious Lord !

Let all the saints above,
Let all the sons of men record,

And celebrate thy love.

HYMN 231, 8s and 6s, Peculiar. 231

Hallelujah to the Triune God. f" 1 SING-Hallelujah! praise the Lord !

Exalt our God with one accord,

And in his name rejoice:
Ne'er cease to sing, thou ransomed host !
To Father, Son, and Holy Ghost,
Till, in the realms of endless light,

Your praises shall unite.
2 There we, to all eternity,

Shall join th' angelic lays,
And sing, in perfect harmony,

To God our Saviour's praise;
He hath redeemed us by his blood,
And made us kings and priests to God:
For us--for us the Lamb was slain,
Praise ye the Lord !-- Amen.

HYMN 232, 7s and 6s, Peculiar. 232

The Alarm. aff* 1 SINNER! stop-Oh! stop and think,

farther go
Will you sport upon the brink

Of everlasting woe?
On the verge of ruin stop;-

Now the friendly warning take;
Stay your footsteps, ere you drop

Into the burning lake.
2 Say-have you an arm like God,

That you his will oppose ?
Fear you not that iron rod

With which he breaks his foes ?
Can you stand in that dread day,

Which his justice shall proclaim,
When the earth shall melt away,

Like wax before the flame?

3 Ghastly death will quickly come,

And drag you to his bar;
Then you 'll hear your awful doom,

And sink in deep despair!
All your sins will round you crowd;

You will mark their crimson dye,
Each for vengeance crying loud,

And then-no refuge nigh!

The Sinner exhorted.

HYMN 233, L. M. 233 affe 1 SINNER! Oh! why so thoughtless grcwr ?

Why in such fearful haste to die?
Why speed thy flight to worlds unknown,-

Regardless of thy destiny?
2 Wilt thou defy the wrath of God,

Led on by sin's delusive dreams?
Madly despise the Saviour's blood,

And force thy passage to the flames ?
3 Sinner! Oh! lift thy thoughts above,

And hear the Lord of life unfold mf The glories of his dying love

For ever telling, yet untold !

HYMN 234, %. 234

The Sinner warned.
HASTE, O sinner! to be wise,

Stay not for the morrow's sun;
Wisdom warns thee, from the skies,

All the paths of death to shun.
2 Haste, and mercy now implore;

Stay not for the morrow's sun
Thy probation may be o'er,

Ere this evening's work is done.
3 Haste, O sinner! now return;

Stay not for the morrow's sun;
Lest thy lamp should cease to burn,

Ere salvation's work is done.
4 Haste, while yet thou canst be blest;

Stay not for the morrow's sun;
Death may thy poor soal arrest,

Ere the morrow is begun.

HYMN 235, 11s. 235

Danger of Delay. 1 LAY not, delay not; O sinner draw near,

The waters of life are now flowing for thee; No price is demanded, the Saviour is here,

Redemption is purchased, salvation is free. 2 Delay not, delay not; why longer abuse

The love and compassion of Jesus, thy God? i fountain is opened, --how canst thou refuse To wash, and be cleansed in his pard’ning

blood ?
3 Delay not, delay not; O sinner! to come,

For mercy still lingers and calls thee to-day;
Her voice is not heard in the vale of the tomb;

Her message, unheeded, will soon pass away. 4 Delay not, delay not; the Spirit of grace, Long grieved and resisted, may take its sad

flight; mp

And leave thee in darkness to finish thy race, P

To sink in the gloom of eternity's night.

HYMN 236, L. M. 236

One Thing needful.
HY will ye waste, on trifling cares,

That life which God's compassion spares,
While, in the various range of thought,

The one thing needful is forgot?
2 Shall God invite you from above?

Shall Jesus urge his dying love ?
Shall troubled-conscience give you pain,

And all these pleas unite in vain?
3 Not so your eyes will always view

Those objects which you now pursue ;
Not so will heaven and hell appear,

When death's decisive hour is near.
4 Almighty God! thy grace impart;

Fix deep conviction on each heart:
Nor let us waste, on trifling cares,
That life which thy compassion spares.

HYMN 237, C. M. 237

Exhortation to Repentance.
1 EPENT! the voice celestial cries;

N No longer dare delay:

WHY will

[ocr errors]

The soul that scorns the mandate dies,

And meets a fiery day.
mp2 No more the sovereign eye of God

O'erlooks the crimes of men ;
His heralds now are sent abroad,

To warn the world of sin.
3 O sinners! in his presence bow,

And all your guilt confess;
Accept the offered Saviour now,

Nor trifle with his grace.
4 Soon, will the awful trumpet sound,
mp And call you to his bar;

His mercy knows th' appointed bound,

And yields, to justice there.
5 Amazing love—that yet will call,

And yet prolong our days!
Our hearts subdued by goodness fall,

And weep, and love, and praise.

HYMN 238, 78. 238

The Sinner meeting God.
INNER! art thou still secure ?

Wilt thou still refuse to pray?
Can thy heart or hand endure,

In the Lord's avenging day? mf 2 See,-his mighty arm is bared;

Awful terror's clothe his brow !

For his judgments stand prepared ;>

Thou must either break or bow. mf 3 At his presence nature shakes,

Earth affrighted hastes to ilee,
Solid mountains melt like wax:

What will then become of thee?
4 Who his coming may abide ?

You that glory in your shame!-
Can you find a place to hide,
When the world is wrapt in flame?

HYMN 239, 8s, 78 and 4. 239

The Voice of Mercy. af 1 ,

Now with sweetest voice she calis;
