YOUR Brother-Affiftant in the BEE, Euftace Drone, Efq; has mifinform'd you, as he did his three Counfel.

Pray where do you find that we have let fall one dif-refpectful Word, or fhewn the leaft Difregard for Mr. Addijon? unless it be mentioning him with his crazy Kinfman, and for this indeed, we ask Pardon both of and the Public.

you

The Virtues of Mr. Addison, as we have promis'd, are eafily fhewn. They are as confpicuous in his Writings as they were in his Life; the whole Tenour of his Actions was PRAISE-WORTHY. But we defy you to recite any one Action, either in the DRONE's Life or all his Collections that is worthy of any Thing but the meanest Contempt.

What mighty Genius is requir'd to filch one Paragraph from Fog, another from the Craftsman, a Poem from the Grabtreet Journal, and an Ode from the Weekly Mifcellany?

Yet it is not to be difputed, you fay, but that Mr. Budgel has more Judgment, Wit, and Learning than fifty Bokfellers put together, because he is Prefident of a Society near Hockley in the Hole, the Refidence of old Preston and his Bears. We grant that your Patron was born to a jmall Eltate in Cornwal; and, by wearing the Chriftian Name of his Uncle Euftace, a Barrister in the Temple, it was fomewhat enlarged.

What he was born to, by Maggots, thro' Vanity, and a litigious Temper he foon fquander'd away, Thus having ftrip'd himfelf by his Folly, he had neither Wit enough to provide for hereafter, nor Judgment fufficient, to keep what his Friends had provided for him.

A fractious Temper and the most pedantic Affectation eafily difcover'd themselves in him when but a SchoolBoy. He did indeed take great Delight in declaiming and feribling, and when he could borrow any pretty Story Book, fuch as the delectable Hiftory of Fortunatus and the Seven wife Mafters of Rome, whatever pithy Sentences or moral Fables he found therein he diligently transcribed; and made huge Collections out of these renowned, dogmatical Syftems, Human Prudence and Wit's Common-Wealth.

This his Stock of Reading, you very well know Gentlemen, is vifible in all his Writings; for he is old Dog at Fable, and mumps a Winter Tale with as much Humour and as good a Grace as his Nurfe told it him in the Chimney Corner. he's a rare Mimick; and for moralizing what he reads, Francis Quarles, Etq; of Emblem making Memory was a Novice to him.

Gad

Tante molis erat. Such were the ! LITTLE Talents by which he thought. he might become useful to the Inha-y bitants of Cornwal; we would here be understood to mean the Rufticks only: And when he came to London, as his Uncle had done by his Fortune, his Coufin did by his Fame, laid him, a tolerable Foundation to build upon, but the Edifices he has erected, are only Caftles in the Air.

We must acquaint you, Gentlemeni lo for it is prefumed you are but latelface dubb'd BEE MASTERS, that beim fore Mr. Budgel went Abroad (h that well Fortune being made and marr'd ColdIreland, tho' the South-Sea fiaithdeave him,) his kind Relation let hi have the Honour of owning a fe Spectators, to fet him up for a W His next Appearance was in an fcene Epilogue; and fancying him! a Poet, he put in for the Laurel, E inftead of obtaining it, got himni recorded for a Dance by the imm tal Pen of his Grace the late Di

of Buckingham; who in his admirable, and juft Seffion of the Poets, thus introduces him, viz.

Pert BURGELL appear'd; and, demanding the bays.

Said, thofe works must be good which have ADDISON's praife:

But Apollo reply'd, it is very well known, Moft AUTHORS WILL PRAISE whatfoever's their OWN.

Thus, as Mr. Tickell was the Tranflator of the first Book of Homer, and the Writer of the Drummer; in the fame Manner, and no otherwife, is the witty, and judicious Mr. Budgell the Author of thofe Papers mark'd X in the Spectator, of which we have here given you the true Ac

count.

From tranfcribing Spectators, Mr. Budgell next applied his LITTLE natural Talents in tranflating not only from (but very far from) the Greek the Characters of THEOPHRASTUS. A Chrracter of which Performance, take, in the Words of the learned Dr. GALLY (who has obliged the Public with an excellent Verfion of that Work,) viz.

To judge of Mr. BUDGELL's Translation, fays the Doctor, according to thofe Rules which Tranflators ought to oblerve, it must be CONDEMNED. B In general it is not exact and accurate enough; but what is far worse, Mr. BUDGELL gives, in too many Inftances, bis own Thoughts instead of representing the true Sente of Thethophraftus. This is perverting the Humour of the Original, and in Ef Bfect, making a new Work inflead of ingiving only a Tranflation of an old Rone. Mr. BUDGELL confeffes, that Se bas taken a great deal of Liberty; thut when a Tranflator confefles thus En uch, it does but give the Reader good Reason to fufpect, that inflead of taking laft great deal, be bas in Reality taken bino much *.

Thus, Gentlemen, have we imparBy ally laid before you the Teftimonies

of two eminent Writers, concerning the Judgment, Wit, and Learning of your Hive-Keeper; and, it is not to be doubted, but you have Candour enough to allow, that the Duke of Buckingham's Judgment, Wit and Learning, are as far fuperior to Mr. Badgell's, as his are to either of his Female BEE Venders, in High Holbourn, or little St. Martin's Lane, in which Places he has metamorphofed a Servant Wench into a Publisher, and an old Mantua-Maker into a Mercury. Therefore,

Alike, the Bee and Drone we ftill deplore,
They fet like falling ftars to rife no more.

You had much better, Gentlemen, for the future turn your remarking Talents fome other Way; for, affure yourfelves, one thoufand feven hundred and fifty BEES will never more be printed; the Public being fully convinced of the Juttnefs of our Cenfure, that it was a Weekly Hudge Podge of fad Trash, as to the original Compofitions therein contained.

Let us advise you to speak TRUTH and give out no more fuch LYING Outcries. -This is the PAMPHLET which was fuppreffed in fo extraordinary a Manner; when you very well know, it was never fuppreffed at all, but was voluntarily thrown up by the Bookfellers. And we put your whole Society at Defiance to point out fo much as ONE fcurrilous or candalous Expreflion in our State of the Cafe; nor has either he or you replied to the three incontestable Initances of notorious Falfhood proved upon him.

Mr. Budgell is not at this Time as you falfly reprefent, either under the Hand of Oppreffion, nor any Misfortune but that of learning a drowning MOUSE to dance, which Misfortune is only unavoidable thro' his own innate Obftinacy in fancying himself, as he wrote to the Craftjman and the PaiBoy, to be one of the finett Writers, and greatest Wits of the Age. But

See the Preface to Dr. Gally's Tranflation of Theophraftus. p. 17 and 18.
