Unprepared Translation. This may now be offered instead of prepared books, either in Latin, Greek, or both languages, and a few specimens are included in this book for those who wish to know the standard. No one however should make the change except those who have a really competent knowledge of the language offered. For such candidates hints will probably be superfluous, while to weaker ones they will be unnecessary, since they are strongly advised to leave the subject alone. A few commonplaces about Unseen Translation may perhaps be briefly repeated.

In translating unprepared passages, the use of the dictionary should be tabooed. To yield to the temptation of looking out even one or two words each time may prevent any real progress from being made. Every passage should be read over two or three times to gain the general sense, before pen is put to paper. Then such words and sentences as remain unknown must be guessed at, or rather inferred from the context. Even if some of the guesses are wrong, it will matter little if they suit the context, and if the whole passage makes sense, and in the main the right sense. The only two unpardonable faults are omissions and nonsense. No translation which is broken up into small parts by frequent hiatuses, or which makes no connected sense, can be of the slightest value. All translation should be, if possible, into good idiomatic English, but it is best not to be too free. Where the syntax and idiom of the two languages coincide, the literal translation should be adhered to.

It may be added that, in the prepared books, the only thing required is the correct translation of the passages set.

9. If it costs £38. 108. to keep a family of 7 persons for 11 weeks, what will be the expense of keeping 15 persons for 9 weeks at the same rate?

10. The simple interest on a debt amounts to £460. 58. in 7 years at 5 per cent. What was the sum originally borrowed?

11. A room is 30 feet long, 21 feet broad, and 15 feet high. What will it cost to paper it with paper 2 feet 6 inches wide at 18. 3d. a yard, allowing 8 feet by 5 feet 3 inches for each of 2 doors, 10 feet by 6 feet for each of 2 windows, and 7 feet by 5 feet for a fireplace?

12. Find the income produced by the investment of £36500 in 2 per cent. Consols at 914. What will be the change in it when the interest is reduced to 2 per cent.?

1. Multiply £4. 68. 8d. by 3215, and divide 1287 acres 2 roods 10 poles by 54.

10. A puts £5000 into a business, B £7500, and C £10000. The profits amount to £12000. What should be the share of each?

11. How many yards of carpet three feet wide will be required to cover a floor 21 feet long and 16 feet broad? What will be the cost at 7s. 6d. a yard?

12. A person sold out £12500 Canada 2 per cent. stock at 90, and invested the proceeds in Victoria 4 per cent. stock at 108. What will be the change in his income?

III. TRINITY TERM, 1902.

1. Divide £2786. 68. 8d. by 643; and multiply 35 acres 3 roods 2 poles 2 yds. 2 ft. 3 ins. by 36.

2. Find the L. C. M. of 3029, 3961, 51493.

9. If £1383. 108. 6d. is divided between A, B, and C, so that A gets half as much again as B, and B twice as much as C, what is C's share?

10. A man's net income being £750 after paying income-tax at 1s. 3d. in the £, on what amount is income-tax assessed?

11. If goods are marked for sale at 20 per cent. above cost price, and 5 per cent. discount is given for cash, what is the actual profit on an outlay of £700 ?

12. The yearly dividend on a 3 per cent. stock is £237. If the stock is sold at 797 per cent., what sum does the sale produce?

1. Find the G. C. M. of 1106027 and 2439883, and the L. C. M. of 33, 117, 135, 143, 195.

3. The net profits of a company, £32720. 58., are to be divided equally into 10,000 shares, fractions of a penny being neglected; what balance will be left over?
