PREFACE.

The collection of the following records, dates and historical sketches of an honorable ancestry has been a most pleasant pastime to the compiler. He claims no credit or skill for his work. The memory of his immediate ancestors has been from early manhood a continuous benediction and stimulus to a better life.

That in these records there are grave errors and omissions there can be no doubt, and the only excuse he offers is an otherwise too active a business life to give the subject the research it deserves. It is believed to be a much fuller record than has been heretofore attempted, and if any who bear the honorable name of Meigs, are inspired to a better life and to emulate the noble deeds of some ancestor whose advantages were no better, he will feel paid for the effort, as well as the pleasure the work has afforded.

The writer desires in this place to record his great obligations for documents, suggestions, and assistance rendered, to Capt. Samuel Emlen Meigs, of Philadelphia, Pa., Hon. Daniel Bishop Meigs, of Farnham, P. Q., Charles A. Meigs, of Orange, N. J., George H. Meigs, of New Haven, Conn., Dr. Reynold W. Wilcox, of New York City, M. Fayette Meigs, of San Francisco, Cal., John Henry Meigs, of Madison, Conn., Miss Elizabeth M. Meigs, of Washington, D. C.; and especially to Mrs. Lucy A. H. Burgert, of Cleveland, Ohio, without whose encouragement and valuable assistance the work would never have been undertaken and completed.

"The Lord hath wrought great glory by them through his great power from the beginning. There be of them that hath left a name behind them, that their praises might be reported. And some there be which have no memorial. But with their seed shall continually remain a good inheritance and their children are within the covenant. The people will tell of their wisdom, and the congregation will show forth their praise." -Ecclesiasticus, xliv. 7-15.
