Run in two heats; each of the above gentlemen respectively winning his
Mr. Cross in the final walking in.

heat.

6 Entries.

Distance, 18 feet 1 inch.

Long Jump.

G. W. Leake (St. George's).

Jumped in a very lofty style; but the distance is not so good as the United Hospitals' Athletic Club ought to command.

Three-Legged Race.

- Madden, Esq., and Owen, Esq.

2 Prizes.

Each of the above gentlemen received a prize, but only through the handkerchief having slipped from off two other gentlemen, who had else been doubtless first. This race affords general amusement, but is a species of Athletics rarely called for in life.

6 Entries.

2 Heats.

Time, 18 seconds.

120 Yards over 10 Hurdles.

G. R. Nunn (Guy's).

E. W. Spragge (University).

2 Prizes.

Both these gentlemen won their heats; and Mr. Nunn, from whom feats of strength may be justly expected, deserves great praise, both for his speed and the manner in which he gained this prize, which were all that could be wished.

[blocks in formation]

Time, 10 minutes 43 seconds. 1st mile, 5m. 26s.; 2nd mile, 5m. 161s.

An excellent event, as although Mr. Norman showed fine running and great judgment, Mr. Harding's running was very good, and plucky in the extreme; and when he received his second prize for this race, the spectators manifested their feelings by giving him round after round of applause. About 7 Entries.

Consolation Race.

S. E. Solly (St. Thomas's).

1 Prize.

This gentleman won this easily; and the prize that he received is but little reward for all the pains and trouble he has taken as Treasurer to the United Hospitals' Athletic Club. Indeed, to him and to Mr. G. A. Norman, the Secretary to the Club, whose office though honorary is by no means a sinecure, every member of the Club owes his best thanks.

The swimming races-about the most useful accomplishment, and one of the best fitted for such a humane profession as is the medical of the United Hospitals' Athletic Club come off on the 1st July. We hope they will have many entries and will be well contested.

The United Hospitals' Football Club deserves better support than it last year received, and will, we hope, be a great success in the season of 1868-69.

FOWNES' MANUAL OF CHEMISTRY.

THE TENTH EDITION.

Revised by H. BENCE JONES, M.D., F.R.S., and HENRY WATTS, B.A., F.R.S.

The delay in the appearance of this edition has been caused chiefly by the necessity of altering the arrangement and notation of the work, so as to meet the requirements of the present state of Chemical Science. In making these alterations, the Editors have earnestly endeavoured to preserve the simple and progressive character of the original work, in the hope that FOWNES' MANUAL, thus altered, may still continue to be the favourite text-book of our

schools.

BY R. WORMELL, M.A.,

Medallist in Mathematics and Natural Philosophy (London).

The Course includes the propositions of Geometry embodied in the First Six Books of Euclid, and many others equally useful and interesting, with simple but complete demonstrations. It also includes all the problems usually given in books of Practical Geometry. The application of each proposition in the ornamental and industrial Arts is clearly shown-e.g., in the construction of tools, machinery, buildings, articles of furniture, &c.; also in Surveying, Levelling, Engineering, &c. Elementary notions of Geometry are explained by reference to Concrete Illustrations. The work is divided into Chapters containing the Propositions referring to the same class of figures, and is followed by Questions for Examination, Theorems and Problems for Solution, and Arithmetical Questions.

Just Published, New Edition.

JUNIOR ATLAS OF MODERN GEOGRAPHY. Containing 14 coloured
Maps, with Index to the Principal Places. Price 7s. cloth.

The selection of these maps for the use of the great public school at Harrow, offers the strongest proof of their superiority. Being the largest maps of their class, their size (17 inches by 14) affords opportunities for the insertion of various details, for which there is no room in the maps of smaller atlases. In the present edition the new Railways have been added; the alterations in the boundaries of Germany, the Russian Empire, and Turkestan have been made; and the latest divisions of India are introduced. The transfer of the North Western part of America from Russia to the United States, as well as the amalgamation of Canada with other British Provinces in one dominion, are among the numerous improvements inserted in this edition, to keep pace with recent geographical events.

CLASSICAL ATLASES. Uniform in size and price with the above, are also published.

CLASSICAL AND MODERN ATLASES. Uniform in size, &c., price 12s. 6d.,
