DISCOURSE IX.
THE CURE OF BLIND BARTIMEUS.
And it came to pass, that as he was come nigh unto Jericho,
a certain blind man sat by the way-side, begging: and
hearing the multitude pass by, he asked what it meant,
and they told him that Jesus of Nazareth passed by;
and he cried, saying, Jesus, thou Son of David, have
mercy on me. And they who went before rebuked
him, that he should hold his peace: but he cried so
much the more, Thou Son of David, have mercy on me.
And Jesus stood and commanded him to be brought
unto him, and when he was come near, he asked him,
saying, What wilt thou that I should do unto thee:
and he said, Lord, that I may receive my sight; and
Jesus said unto him, Receive thy sight; thy faith hath
saved thee: and immediately he received his sight, and
followed him, glorifying God.-Luke xviii. 35-43. 110
DISCOURSE XIII.
MARTHA AND MARY.
Now, it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a
certain village; and a certain woman, named Martha, re-
ceived him into her house: and she had a sister, called
Mary, who also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word;
but Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came
to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister
hath left me to serve alone? bid her, therefore, that she
help me: And Jesus answered and said unto her, Mar-
tha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many
things; but one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen
that good part, which shall not be taken away from her
-Luke x. 38-42. 157

DISCOURSE XVIII.
THE UNBELIEF OF THOMAS.
(EASTER.)
But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not
with them when Jesus came. The other disciples,
therefore, said unto him, We have seen the Lord. But
he said unto them, Except I shall see in his hands the
print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of
the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not be-
lieve. And after eight days, again his disciples were
within, and Thomas with them. Then came Jesus, the
doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace
be unto you. Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither
thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy
hand, and thrust it into my side; and be not faithless,
but believing. And Thomas answered and said unto
him, My Lord and my God.-John xx. 24-28.

And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that,
behold, there appeared a chariot of fire, and horses of
fire, and parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up
by a whirlwind into heaven.-2 Kings ii. 11.

DISCOURSE XXII.
THE PUNISHMENT OF ADONIBEZEK IMPROVED.
But Adoni-bezek fled: and they pursued after him, and
caught him, and cut off his thumbs and his great toes,
And Adoni-bezek said, "Threescore and ten kings,
having their thumbs and their great toes cut off, gather-
ed their meat under my table: as I have done, so God
hath requited me.—Judges i. 6, 7. 266
