ONE OF THE EARLIEST ORIGINAL ENGLISH ROMANCES

BAYLY, THOMAS. Herba Parietis, or the Wall-Flower as it grew out of the Stone-Chamber belonging to the Metropolitan Prison of London, called Newgate, being a History which is partly true, partly Romantick, Morally Divine, whereby a Marriage between Reality and Fancy is Solemnized by Divinity, written by Thomas Bayly, D.D., whilst he was a Prisoner there. With a fine engraved frontispiece, showing the Old Newgate Prison Gate, small folio, dark brown morocco, tooled emblematically, the design suggested by the engraved frontispiece, the sides are covered with an outline design of the Gate of Newgate in blind, on the stone-work on each side of top and bottom is inlaid wall-flowers in bloom, in red, green and brown, tooled in blind, and heightened with powdered gold ground, a most artistic emblematic binding, by Riviere and Son. London: Printed by J. G. and are to be sold by John Holden.

1650. $175.00

Under this curious title we have one of the few original English Romances of the 17th century, for most of those published at this period were taken from the French or Italian. It is extremely rare.

The Theatre of God's Judgments: or a collection of Sacred, Ecclesiasticall, and prophane Authors, concerning the admirable Judgments of God upon the transgressours of his commandments. 4to, brown morocco, super extra, vellum fly leaves, gilt edges, by Riviere. London: Printed by Adam Islip, 1597. $375.00

The First Edition. Of extreme rarity. The book is full of curious matter, interesting to the student of 16th century history, but is specially curious and valuable for the account it gives, at p. 147, of Christopher Marlowe and his tragical death. $2,500.00

THE ONLY KNOWN COPY OF THE ORIGINAL ISSUE OF THE FIRST BIBLE EVER PRINTED IN AMERICA IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE, and the FOUNDATION STONE FOR ALL COLLECTIONS OF AMERICAN BIBLES. The reasons for making so strong a statement as the above, can, here, be only briefly summarized.

ISAIAH THOMAS, in his "HISTORY OF PRINTING IN AMERICA," states that KNEELAND & GREEN, Boston Printers, issued from their press for DANIEL HENCHMAN and other booksellers, a small quarto BIBLE, and that he was informed of this by those who had assisted in the printing. He gives the date as "about the time that the partnership of KNEELAND & GREEN expired," which was 1752, and QUOTES THE IMPRINT, WHICH CORRESPONDS WITH THAT OF THE COPY HERE DESCRIBED. He states that it was carried through the press AS PRIVATELY AS POSSIBLE, and BORE THE LONDON IMPRINT so as "to prevent a prosecution from those in England and Scotland who published the BIBLE by a patent from the crown, or cum privilegio, as did the Universities of OXFORD and CAMBRIDGE."

The AUTHORIZED imprint was: "OXFORD: PRINTED BY THOMAS BASKETT, PRINTER TO THE UNIVERSITY, 1752."

It is evident that when the Boston printers put forth this Bible THEY DARED NOT COPY THE AUTHORIZED IMPRINT, as the piracy would be apparent and the consequences disastrous, and so selected the, almost identical, name of MARK BASKETT, a London printer of established repute, as a cloak for their designs.

This is the McKee copy, the only one known, which brought $2025 at auction in 1902.
