A SIXTEENTH CENTURY ENGLISH MORALITY PLAY:
"THE CONFLICT OF CONSCIENCE," ONE OF THE

FIRST HISTORICAL PLAYS IN THE
ENGLISH LANGUAGE

WOODES, NATHANIEL. An excellent new Commedie, Intituled: The Conflict of Conscience. Contayninge, A most lamentable example, of the dolefull desperation of a miserable wordlinge, termed, by the name of Philologvs, who forsooke the trueth of Gods Gospel, for feare of the losse of lyfe, & worldly goods. Compiled by Nathaniell Woodes. Small 4to, blue levant morocco, gilt, inside borders gilt, gilt edges, by Bedford. At London: Printed, by Richarde Bradocke dwelling in Aldermanburie, a little above the Conduict. Anno 1581.

EXCESSIVELY RARE, as the Early Morality plays rarely if ever occur

for sale.

This is probably the last play of the kind written in England, and it is one of the most curious. There are sixteen dramatis personae, but these parts are to be played by six actors.

Not in the Hoe or Huth collections. It is one of the most important plays in English dramatic history. (See Collier's Dramatic Poetry, Vol. II, p. 357). IT IS AMONG THE FIRST PLAYS IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE WHERE AN HISTORICAL CHARACTER IS INTRODUCED.
