$75.00

In the December previous to the date of this letter he had published a story ("Was it Heaven? Or Hell?'') illustrating his theory that the sin of lying was excusable under certain circumstances. When soon afterwards serious misfortunes befell him and his family, they were considered by some to be a judgment upon him for the expression of such a theory. This letter is written to one of the critics in defence of it. "On that day my wife had been lying feeble and helpless in bed for nearly five months and it had been three months since I, or anyone except a daughter, the doctor and a trained nurse had seen her face; on that Xmas day my other daughter was lying near to death in a remote part of the house (pneumonia), and the diligent lying of the tale was going on! The mother does not suspect that for three months there has been another trained nurse in the house. She thinks Jean (the sick daughter) is having fine times outside with the neighboring young people Yesterday she (his wife) spoke of a new play, and said: 'Send Miss Lyon with Jean to the Matinee tomorrow.' I came near to saying: 'Why Jean can hardly sit up in bed, yet'—but I caught myself in time and gave the promise," etc.
