The year of their marriage is not known, but in one of his poems (as they appeared in this impression) Habington speaks of Lucia as Castara.” An exceedingly rare book, described by Dr. Bliss as the rarest volume of poems of the period, and it is enumerated by John Payne Collier in his "Rarest Books in the English Language." For its interest to the SHAKESPEARE collector, see p. 52.

Hall's Satires is considered one of the most important works issued during the reign of Queen Elizabeth; IT WAS KNOWN TO SHAKESPEARE AND WAS RIGIDLY SUPPRESSED WHEN IT WAS ISSUED, WHICH ACCOUNTS FOR ITS EXCESSIVE RARITY, ONLY A FEW COPIES OF THE FIRST EDITION BEING KNOWN.

THE ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT OF HARDY'S "SUNDAY
MORNING TRAGEDY"

HARDY, THOMAS. The Original Autograph Manuscript,
signed, of Hardy's most potent Poem, "A Sunday Morning
Tragedy." It is composed of 32 stanzas of four lines each,
written in ink on 7 pages, 4to, and bound in red levant morocco
extra, lettered on side and back by Sangorski & Sutcliffe. Signed
at the end, "Thomas Hardy, January, 1904."
$650.00

This lengthy poem, from the hand of the most famous of living English authors, is a distinctive example of his work. It was published in the London Review and contains the original pencil notes to the printer. Hardy's manuscripts are exceedingly rare.

The first four stanzas are as follows:

"I bore a daughter, flower fair,
Yea, flower-fair, alas for me;

I joyed to mother one so rare,

But dead and gone I now would bc.

"Men looked and loved her as she grew,

And she was won, alas for me;

She told me nothing, but I knew,

And saw that sorrow was to be:

"I knew that one had made her thrall,

A thrall to him, alas for me;

And then, at last, she told me all,

And wondered what her end would be.

"She owned that she had loved too well,

Had loved too well, unhappy she,

And bore a secret time would tell,

Though in her grave she'd gladlier be."
