ORIGINAL UNPUBLISHED POEM

LAMB, CHARLES. Threatre a l'Usage des Jeunes Personnes, par Madame la Comtesse de Genlis Paris: 1781. 4 vols., 12mo, old calf, enclosed in a levant morocco case by Sangorski and Sutcliff.

$1200.00 PRESENTATION COPY from Charles Lamb to his friend, W. Hone, inscribed: "To my dear friend, W. Hone. Tryphina and Tryphosa greet you with me. Ch. Lamb, 9th May, 1823."

On the first fly-title is the following verse in Lamb's handwriting:

"Darkness away! I am the child of light;

Of light and song, what will thou then with me?

I am not thine.

To wander with the winds.

To roam through space."

The inscription to Hone is of extreme interest, as in it he brings in his sister Mary and his adopted daughter Emma Isola, calling them Tryphina and Tryphosa.

In a letter to Wm. Hone which is published in the "Letters of Charles Lamb," he makes use of the same terms, thus: "Tryphina and Tryphosa who the world calleth Mary and Emma greet you with me."

A MANUSCRIPT ESSAY AND TWO AUTOGRAPH LETTERS,
SIGNED BY CHARLES LAMB, REGARDING HIS
"LETTER TO AN OLD GENTLEMAN," WITH

THE ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT

LAMB, CHARLES.

1. A. L. S. ("S. T. P. Q."), 1 p., folio (1822), to the Editor of London Magazine, "To the Author of the Letters to a Young Gentleman, whose Education had been neglected (Thomas De Quincey),"

II. A. L. S. (Elia), 1 p., folio (1822), to the Editor of the London Magazine. This letter is reprinted in Lamb's collected works.

III. A. L. S. (C. Lamb), 1 p., folio (1822), to the Editor of the London Magazine. $2500.00

The first letter tells how the idea of the "Letter to an Old Gentleman" was evolved, and the other two treat of the publication of it. The article was suggested by De Quincey's Opium Eater and he mentions De Quincey in all three letters.

Send Quinsey the proof, and let him judge of it. I will sacrifice it if he does not approve of it."

Extremely interesting.
