the palsy, grievously tormented. And Jesus saith unto him, I will come and heal him. The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof; but speak the word only, and my servant Thall be healed. For I am a man under authority, having foldiers under me: and I say unto this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it. When Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no not in Ifrael. And I say unto you, that many shall come from the east, and west, and· shall lie down with Abraham, and Haac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven. But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. And Jesus said unto the centurion, Go thy way, and as thou haft believed, so be it done unto thee. And his servant was healed in the self-fame hour.

God, who knowest us to be set in the midst of so many

and great dangers, that by reason of the frailty of our Nature we cannot always stand upright; Grant to us such strength and protection, as may support us in all dangers, and carry us through all temptations, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

PA RA P H R AS E. On the COLLECT for the fourth Sunday after the Epiphany. O Lord, who knowest us to be surrounded by many and great dangers, both of enemies, and of our fins, who knowest all our frailuies, that we cannot with our utmon efforts, always persevere in our duty, but have al:vays fome neglects of it to answer for; we beseech thee so to strengthen and protect us, by thy grace and heavenly providence, that being supported in all the dangers to which we are exposed by the assaults of our enemies, or any unfortunate accident that may befall us, we may be enabled to resili every temptation; and this we pray for the sake of Jesus Chrift, our Lord. The Epiftle. Rom. xiii. 1.
ET every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For

there is no power but of God : the powers that be, are ordained of God. Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, relistech the ordinance of God: and they that relift, fhall receive to themselves damnation. For rulers are not a terror to good Works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power ? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same : for he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid, for he bearech not the sword in vain : for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil. Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake. For, for this caose pay you tribute also: for they are God's minifters, attending continually upon this very thing. Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the fed, and there was a great calın. But the men marvelled, saying, What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the fea obey him? And when he was come to the other side, into the country of the Gergesenes, there met him two porfeffed with devils, corning out of the tombs, exceeding fierce, so that no man might pass by that way. And behold, they cried out, taying, What have we to do with chee, Jesus, thou Son of Gid? art thou come hicher to torment us before the cime? And there was a grod way off from them an herd of many fwine, feeding. So the devils besought him, saying, If thou cat us out, fuffer us to go away into



the herd of swine. And he said unto them, Go. And when they were come out, they went into the herd of swine, and behoid, the whole herd of swine ran violently down a steep place into the sea, and perished in the waters. And behold, the whole city came out to meet Jelus; and when they faw him, they belought him that he would depart out of their coasts.

So the servants of the housholder came and said unto hirn, Sır, didft not thou fow good feed in thy field ? from whence then hath it cares? He laid unto them, An enemy hath done this. The servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gacher them up ? But he laid, Nay; lelt while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them. Ehold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed

upon us, that we should be called the fons of God : therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet af pear what we shall be: but we know that when he shall appear, we shall be like him ; for we shall see him as he is. . And every inan that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure. Whosoever committech fin, tranfgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law. And ye know that he was manifested to take away our fins; and in him is no sin: Whosoever abideth in him, finneth not : whosoever finneth, hath not seen him, neither known him, Little children, let no man deceive you : he that doeth righteousness, is righteous even as he is righteous. He that committerh sin, is of the devil : for the devil finneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifefted, that he might destroy the works of the devil.

WHEN if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ,

or there: believe it not. For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders ; infomuch that (if it were posible) they shall deceive the very clect. Behold, I have told you before.
