THE PICTURESQUE GEOGRAPHICAL READERS

By CHARLES F. KING author of "Methods and Aids in Geography First Book "HOME AND SCHOOL" 240 pages 120 illustrations Price 50 cents net

"In this book Professor King has made good his precepts so elabo rately laid down in his Methods and Aids in Geography,' in which he pleaded for entertaining information in the teaching of geography, and gave a bewildering array of aids and appliances and suggestions to that end. The author has given us a book which, while designed primarily for the lower grades of a grammar school, will entertain and instruct children of any grade. It is full of important and necessary fact, and told in a manner at once simple and entertaining. It is strikingly and fully illustrated, there being more than 120 cuts in the book, many of which are full-page, and all have the rare charm of faithfully illustrating the subject-matter in the text. To teachers this Reader will be a valuable adjunct in the teaching of geography." Journal of Education. EVERY-DAY BUSINESS

By M. S. EMERY Boards 30 cts by mail 35 cts

"This is emphatically a new book, on a new plan, and will be found of unusual interest and value. There is a growing tendency to make the schools practically useful, and it is certainly true that much pertaining to the ordinary affairs of life may be taught with both pleasure and profit to the pupils. This book is an effort to place before the young people a few practical suggestions on Letter Writing, the Sending of Telegrams, Post-Office Business, Notes and Drafts, Insurance, etc., and you will find it, upon examination, replete with valuable hints and helps which will be of lasting benefit." Common School Education. SPEAKING PIECES

For little scholars and older pupils Original Recitations and Dialogues including Charades and Entertainments for School Exhibitions and Home Pleasure with Pieces for Birthday and Wedding Anniversaries Decoration Day and other occasional celebrations By ELLEN ORTENSIA PECK Boards 50 cents

"This is one of the best books of its character that have ever come under our notice. The first part is devoted to pieces for little speakers, and the second part is filled with pieces that will be favorites with advanced pupils, and even with children of an older growth. The many varieties of composition include almost numberless methods of expressing beautiful and valuable thoughts and sentiments, and tend to influences of an elevating character. The little book will be a favorite in home and social circles as well as for school exhibitions " Boston Home Journal.

THE SWEDISH SYSTEM OF EDUCATIONAL GYMNASTICS

By BARON NILS POSSE M.G. tral Institute of Stockholm Gymnastic and Fencing Club net by mail $2.20

Graduate of the Royal Gymnastic CenFormerly instructor in the Stockholm Quarto cloth 241 illustrations $2.00

"We do not recall any man of any land who has taken such a hold of the teachers and friends of education in Boston as has Baron Nils Posse. This is due to the fascination of the Swedish system of gymnas tics as originated by P. H. Ling. The city is indebted to Baron Posse for such an awakening on this subject as has never been known on any subject in the same length of time. Through his judicious, unostentatious introduction of physical culture that subject has been advanced as far in a few months as manual training, for instance, in as many years. This work, the personification of the man, will, through its style and illustrations (two hundred and forty-one), do as much for the country as he has personally done for Boston. With him the word gymnastics does not signify merely recreation, grace, and the strengthening of a few muscles; but educational gymnastics signify all that can be included in the development of a healthy body at once graceful, vigorous, and elastic, through physical exercise. Swedish gymnastics have always signified, with Americans, an attempt to restore health, but with him they suggest the best development of healthy boys and girls. That which is most attractive in the Ling-Posse gymnastics from our standpoint is the rhythm, through which every fibre of the physical being is made vibrant with the tone of health, the spirit of grace, the vigor of elasticity.". The breathing and vocal exercises for the culture and development of the human voice are made clear by diagrams as well as descriptions, and the fruits of the author's long experience as a teacher are embodied in this eminently practical treatise.". - Critic.
