The old man and the boy, his grandson, take us through every level of what it takes and means to grow up as a gentleman. The depth of feeling expressed by Robert Ruark is amazing as he teaches us the skills necessary to a boy growing up ‘down east’. I read this book every year as did my father, it never fails to deliver something new and wonderful. It can be read as just the wondrous times of a young boy, or as Ruark excellently weaves seemingly simple story lines each chapter into multi-level lessons on life. For no other reason than to wonder how Ruark writes about the Old Man cooking in a tar paper shack on Harker’s Island and his words make your mouth water and your stomach growl, this is a must read for all boys.
