TREAD Softly o'er the hallowed ground
Where sleep the silent dead,
With monumental marble crowned,
With banners overspread.

The struggling light through windows high
Falls o'er the pillared tomb,

And gilds the sculptured forms that lie
Enrobed with sacred gloom.

The babe, for whom the mother wept
With anguish deep and wild;
The bright-eyed maid, who early slept,
With spirit unbeguiled;

The warrior brave-his warfare o'er

The matron passing fair

The schoolman versed in lettered lore

Are softly slumbering here.
