numerous in this volume than is usually the case. They bear his
three coats-of-arms, heraldically described, as follows:-(A) his
own before marriage, argent, a chevron sable between 3 gadflies, 2
in chief, I in point. (B) during his first marriage to Marie Barbançon,
when the de Thou arms are coupled with those of Barbançon, gules,
three crowned lions argent. (C) during his second marriage to
Gasparde de la Chastre, when the arms of his first wife are replaced
by those of the second: quarterly, 1. gules, a cross moline vair (la
