will be found elaborated in the Table of Contents immediately following this necessarily short and imperfect introduction. For one reason or another, more books of a very special and costly character appear to have come into the market during the last twelve months than is usually the case, and the prices realised for works of this exclusive character are certainly higher than they hitherto have been. Books with coloured plates, hand-coloured aquatints, for the most part, have also been much sought after, and, when offered for sale, have been bought at ever-increasing prices. In most respects, however, there would not appear to be much difference between then and now, the "then" being referable. to that recent period when most things of a desirable character began to appear still more desirable, and reflected as from themselves those higher prices which for some time past have been scouted as absurd, or worse, but which we shall be safer as describing as one of the signs of the times.
