Trembling, hoping, ling'ring, flying,
O the pain, the bliss of dying!
Cease, fond nature, cease thy strife,
And let me languish into life.

Hark! they whisper; angels say,
Sister spirit, come away:

What is this absorbs me quite ?
Steals my senses, shuts my sight;
Drowns my spirit, draws my breath?
Tell me, my soul, can this be death?
The world recedes; it disappears;
Heaven opens on my eyes! my ears
With sounds scraphic ring;
Lend, lend your wings, I mount, I fly,
O grave! where is thy victory?
Ŏ death! where is thy sting?

587. L. M. Steele.

The Worship of Heaven, John xvii. 24. 10 For a sweet, inspiring ray, To animate our feeble strains,

From the bright realms of endless day, The blissful realms, where Jesus reigns! 2 There, low before his glorious throne, Adoring saints and angels fall;

And with delightful worship own.
His smile their bliss, their heaven, their all.
Immortal glories crown his head,
While tuneful hallelujah rise,

And love, and joy, and triumph spread
Thro' all th' assemblies of the skies.
He smiles, and seraphs tune their songs
To boundless rapture while they gaze;
Ten thousand thousand joyful congues.
Resound his everlasting praise

5 There all the favorites of the Lamb
Shall join at last the heavenly choir;"
Omay the joy-inspiring theme
Awake our faith and warm dezire!

6 Dear Saviour, let thy Spirit seal Our interest in that blissful place; Till death remove this mortal veil, And we behold thy lovely face. 588. C. M.

The everlasting Song.

1 EARTH has engross'd my love too long; 'Tis time I lift mine eyes Upward, dear Father, to thy throne, And to my native skies.

2 There the blest Man my Saviour sits; The God! how bright he shines! And scatters infinite delights

On all the happy minds.

3 Seraphs with elevated strains, Circle the throne around:

And move and charm the starry plains,
With an immortal sound.
4 Jesus, the Lord, their harps employs;
Jesus, my love, they sing:
Jesus, the life of both our joys,
Sounds sweet from every string.
S [Hark, how beyond the narrow bounds
Of time and space they run;
And echo in majestic sounds

The Godhead of the Son!
6 And now they sink the lofty tune,
And gentler notes they play;
And bring the Father's equal down
To dwell in humble clay.

7 O' sacred beauties of the Man!
(The God resides within:)

His flesh all pure without a stain;
His soul without a sin:

8 But, when to Calvary they turn,
Silent their harps abide:

Suspended songs, a moment, mourn
The God that lov'd and died.

Then, all at once, to living strains
They summon every chord :
Tell how he triumph'd o'er his pains,
And chant the rising Lord.]

10 Now let me mount and join their song, And be an angel too;

My heart, my hand, my ear, my tongue,
Here's joyful work for you.

11 I would begin the music here,
And so my soul should rise:

O for some heavenly notes to bear
My passions to the skies!

12 There ye that love my Saviour sit:
There I would fain have place,

Among your thrones, or at your feet.
So I might see his face.

[blocks in formation]

GLORY to the Father's name,
Jesus's excellence proclaim,
Sing the blessed Spirit's praise,
Angels swell the notes we raise.

590. 112th.

PRAISE Father, Son and Holy Ghost,
Ye suff'ring and triumphant host;
One God, in persons three adore,
The same in majesty and power:
Shout to the great Jehovah's praise
Ye sons of glory and of grace.

591. 8.7.4./

GLORY be to God the Father,
Glory to the eternal Son;
Sound aloud the Spirit's praises,
Join the elders round the throne:

Hallelujah,

Hail the glorious Three in One!

[blocks in formation]

GIVE to the Father praise,
Give glory to the Son;

And to the Holy Ghost,
Be equal honor done:

Our mercies thee their author claim,
All honor to th' eternal name.

593.

TO God the great Father be praise,
All glory to Jesus the Son;
And to the blest Spirit of peace,
Let honors coequal be done.
