renees, with all the official pieces, likely to throw any light upon historical facts. The tenth and eleventh consist of O'Meara's work entitled Napoléon en Exil, and the twelfth and last volume contains a Life of Napoleon, and biographical notices of some of his companions in misfortune."—Revue Ency. vol. 15, p. 584.

"The most eloquent composition, without any comparison, that has appeared in France for the last twenty years, is the Mémoires, dictated by Napoleon, at St. Helena, tó Generals Bertrand and Gourgaud. From their literary merit alone, independent of the name of the writer, these interesting pages must make their way to posterity. Though it is clear that Napoleon was acting a part before Count Las Cases, that affectionate chamberlain, who full of honour but void of talent, listened with open-mouthed admiration to all that fell from his hero; yet the Memorial of St. Helena, is nevertheless, one of the most useful books that has appeared in recent times."New Monthly Mag. vol. 13, p. 586.

The following works relating to Buonaparte, may furnish materials for future historians :

Paris, 1819-1820, 7 vols. 8vo.

This work, which at the time of its publication, was eagerly bought up, is now out of print.

"A more precious volume (says Barbier) than this correspondence, contained the autograph private letters written to Napoleon, by several sovereigns of Europe. Napoleon particularly recommended this volume to the care of his brother Joseph; but the important collection was lost sight of. It was conveyed to London at a later period, and bought for the sum of 700,000 francs, by the minister of a great power, who received back the purchase money on giving up to the sovereigns the letters of their respective ministers."

BUZOT (F. N. L.)

Paris, 1823, 1 vol. 8vo.

"Another volume has been added to the list of works on the French Revolution, and it certainly deserves a place among this historical display. It is a necessary appendage to the important collection published by MM. Barrière and Berville."-Revue Ency. vol. 20, p. 352.

CAMPAN (Made.)

Paris, 1824, 1 vol. 8vo.

"The Mémoires de Madame Campan have obtained considerable celebrity among works of that class. The present Journal is indispensable to complete the Memoirs * * We can trace throughout the production the talent and amiable sentiments of the author of the Mémoires sur Marie-Antoinette."-Revue Ency. vol. 24, p. 772.

The Mémoires above alluded to, were published under the following title:

Paris, 1757, 5 vols. 12mo.

"The Manuscript of these memoirs was found in the archives of a castle which belonged to the Maréchal de Vielleville, and published by the celebrated Père Griffet. They are very curious and interesting Memoirs. They have been much read and highly appreciated."-Barbier's Bibl. vol. 4, p. 12.

Paris, 1820, 3 vols. 8vo.

"M. de Castelnau spent fifteen years in the country, the history of which he has written. He employed the greater part of that time in collecting materials for his important work. After great industry and research, M. de Castelnau has been able to present us with a complete body of history, which he modestly entitles an Essay.”—Revue Ency. vol. 8, p. 509.

CATTEAU-CALLEVILLE (J. P. G.)

Paris, 1818, 2 vols. 8vo.

"M. Catteau-Calleville has visited the countries whose history he has written; he has also examined and compared memoirs in the original; popular traditions; and the opinions of the most learned men residing on the spot. It is then not to be wondered at that in the two volumes before us, we should find the materials drawn from the purest sources, and from those only which are worthy of confidence."-Journal des Savans, quoted by the Revue Ency. vol. 4, p. 264.

CENT JOURS (Les).

Paris, 1820, 1 vol. 8vo.

"This work has two distinct parts; the first is a historic sketch of the Hundred Days; nothing essential is omitted; each event has its day; and though the author has given his facts in chronological order, he has used some art in the disposal of his materials. The second part resembles a historic gallery, of which the principal events of the Hundred Days furnish the subjects. These fragments are really curious. The details relative to the Secret Committee of this period, possess the highest interest, as well as those which immediately relate to the abdication of Napoleon."-Revue Ency. vol. 5, p. 171.

Paris, 1824, 2 vols. 12mo.

“This gallery of biographical Portraits, commences with the reign of Charles VII, and ends with that of Louis XV. It includes among other mistresses, the biographical sketch of the amiable Agnès Sorel, who by a witty remark, roused a monarch from his luxuriant lethargy, to the care of his kingdom; and the Belle Ferronière, the seductive La Vallière, and the prude Maintenon; the Duchess of Châteauroux, and Du Barry. This work may serve as a supplement to the History of the Private Life of Charles VII, Louis XI, Francis I, Henri II, Charles IX, Henri III, Henri IV, Louis XIII, Louis XIV, and Louis XV."-Revue Ency. vol. 34, p. 751-2.
