An important rent-roll, giving the names of about 500 occupiers of the estate, the chief part of which was in the town of Downpatrick. There are notes concerning the land and some of the occupiers.

999 MEATH.—A booke of Entry of the Proceedings of the Comrs. of Assessment for the Countie of East-meath beginning the sixth of January 1657. ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT of 127 leaves. Folio, half calf, the original vellum wrappers bound in, 21l.

This important book of record, which is very clearly written, not only gives particulars of the assessment of the various towns and lands in each Barony, but records the decision of the Commissioners in cases of appeal, and many other items of historical interest. Among the Commissioners were Arthur Lord Raunelagh, Francis Lord Aungier, Dr. Henry Jones (afterwards Bishop of Meath), Major William Cadogan (the Sheriff), Captain Henry Pakenham, and Thomas Blood (the Colonel Blood who afterwards attempted to carry off the Crown Jewels). Some of the entries are signed by William Cadogan and other Commissioners.

This rare and interesting book, dedicated to Sir Oliver St. John, Lord Deputy of Ireland, is a scathing satire upon the Irish people, among whom Rich had lived for many years. In particular he denounces the use of Tobacco with great vigour.
