PREFACE.

THIS little manual is the result of an attempt to complete the task commenced some few years ago by the compiler, in the publication of "Simple Prayers for School Boys."

In that little work, the wants of the class for whom it was intended were alone considered; but when the companion volume, the "Bread of Life," was written, the compiler felt that it would be a mistake to limit its scope to the capacities of boys at school, lest when they went forth into the world, the book should be cast aside, and ties perhaps broken which bound them to habits of devotion formed in the spring-tide of life, when religion, if it really has a place in the heart, leaves the brightest memories behind.

But the use of "Simple Prayers for School Boys" has naturally been discontinued on all such occasions, and, as a rule, some book has been adopted framed upon a different plan, and requiring time ere its merits could be appreciated. Under these conditions, it has often been suggested to the compiler that he should complete his labours by compiling a book of devotions to accompany the "Bread of Life," similar in general structure and in its contents to "Simple Prayers for School Boys," but adapted to the wants of those who have commenced the battle
