unnd uff einen Sessell durch vier Personen inss Rathauss gedragen unnd uff den grossen Sall einverschlossen worden." This was evidently on the day following the conference-Monday, the 24th of April, not on the 23d of March, as stated by Kraus; the lacuna between leaf 1-2 deprives us of definite information. On that day, however (MS. p. 5), a chest containing the silver and private papers of the accused was locked and sealed and then removed to the Rathaus, and the keys of the various rooms whose contents had previously been inventoried, were given over to the authorities.

Flade was not brought to trial until Tuesday, the 10th of May (MS. p. 6). On that day he was conveyed "uff einem Wagen inss Pallast" and subjected to an examination. The trial was not concluded until the 16th of the following September. Many witnesses were examined and torture was freely used to wring confessions from the unfortunate man. Flade, as Kraus has already noticed, appears to have made no well-directed efforts to escape his impending fate; he doubtless recognized from his own experience the utter futility of such a course, and awaited the certain end. Del Rio: Disquis. magic. [lib. v., sect. iv., p. 314], 1612, concludes an account of Flade with these words: " Captus ille Vlaetius, crimen tandem fraudemque confessus, ut et Edelinus, flammis feralibus consumptus fuit." The record of the trial teaches the real force of tandem (MS. p. 198). "Wie er nit clarlicher DE PACTO reden willen, ist die Scherpffe vorgenomen, er durch den Nachrichter gebunden, und uffgezogen worden. Sagt in der Folter, EGO DICO ET DIXI ME ADDIXISSE DIABOLO, ET ABDIXISSE DEO. Mit wass Wortten soliches geschen sei? Sagt, EGO ABRENUNTIO ABDICO DEO, CREDENS SUAM OMNIPOTENTIAM ME SALUARE NEQUIRE PROPTEREA INSERUIO DIABOLO, ist also der Tortur erlassen." No wonder that Hauber, in his Bibliotheca magica, written a century later, in speaking of this very case, exclaims, "Unhappy times! Accursed ways of the inquisitors!" On the day following the conclusion of the trial, Sunday, the 17th of September, the holy sacrament was administered by two priests of the Society of Jesus-Patres Joannes Gilsius and Lucas Ellentz. The unfortunate victim was arraigned for the last time on the following day, September 18th, 1589, and sentenced by his own colleagues to a cruel death. The acknowledgment of the charges against the accused, entitled: "Extract ausser Diederichts Flade Doctors Bekandtnuss oder Urgiht so ime vür dem gantzen Umbstandt wienigh ussgenomen vürgelessen worden, und bejatzet," occupies twelve pages (MS. pp. 231-242). A single citation will show the character of this "Confession" (MS. p. 237): "Er,
