NOTES. 2. Gerardus de Elten. A manuscript note in one of the early-printed books of the University Library seems to indicate the name of the author of the work, which, hitherto, so far as is known, has remained undiscovered. The book is a thin, admirably preserved folio, with broad margins, clear typography and rubricated initials. It has neither title-page nor colophon; neither date, place, nor printer's 's name, and consists of forty-two folios, of which the first, thirty-third, and thirty-fourth are blank, the final signature, on the last leaf but two, being E 4. Each page is made up of either thirtysix or thirty-seven lines, and the water-mark of the paper is a unicorn. The book is altogether unknown to Panzer, but a tolerably accurate description of it will be found in Hain (No. 6,066), who gives neither the date nor the name of the author, but states that it was printed by Arnold Therhoernen (ter Hoernen), a printer who exercised his craft at Cologne from 1471 to 1483. It is to Arnold ter Hoernen that the introduction into typography of Arabic numerals is ascribed, and they are suffi ciently common throughout this volume in the many citations of chapter and verse from the books of the Bible. The title of the book occupies the first line and a half on the second folio or first printed page, and, with the abbreviations written in full, reads as follows: "Declaratio quedam modi et forme venditionis et emptionis reddituum perpetuorum et vitalium." At the end of this title, filling out the line of the text and continuing the sentence, are written these words: "magistri Gherhardi de elten ordinis predicatorum." The handwriting, and the abbreviations used, indicate that this note was written not long subsequent to the publication of the bookcertainly not later than the early part of the sixteenth century. This manuscript annotation has not been correctly read by a later possessor of the volume, who has attempted to write it out in the upper margin as follows: "Eximii Magistri Fratris Everhardi de Alten ord. pred Declaratio," etc., mistaking Gh in Gherhardi for Ev, and e in Elten for a. The author of the volume, therefore, without much doubt, is Gerardus de Elten, or, in the vernacular, Gerhard von Elten, who was probably born at Elten, a small Rhenish town not very far from Cologne. He was a Dominican, and the only work which Panzer ascribes to him is a theologico-legal tract, of a character similar to this one, entitled 'Super receptione puerorum ad religionem'a dissertation on the law- | fulness of admitting boys to a participation in the rites of religion before they have attained the age of puberty. This was also printed by Arnold ter Hoernen at Cologne-a fact which may be taken as corroborative of the statement made in regard to the authorship of the 'Declaratio.' A second and last edition of the Declaratio' was printed at Memmingen, Bavaria, in 1494, still without the name of the author. The copy of the first edition which we have here described contains the book-mark of "Georgius Kloss M. D. Francofurti ad Moenam" who published at Frankfurt in 1811 a surgical work in Latin-and a note on the inside of the cover giving the date of the volume as 1480, which is more than likely to be correct. The only work in which a notice of Gerhard von Elten is likely to be found is Quétif's 'Scriptores Ordinis Prædicatorum' (Paris, 1719-21). THE LIVING AUTHORS OF ICELAND.' A few additions have been made to it, and the deaths which have occurred since its compilation have been noted. Whenever known the avocation and residence of each writer have also been inserted. It is not always easy, however, to give a correct idea in English of the professions pursued or positions held; for lack of a better term, for example, the Icefandic bóndi has been translated by farmer, which is not precisely the same thing, and the title of sýslumaður, signifying the highest official of a sýsla or county, has been inadequately rendered by sheriff. It is proper to state that the list excludes a considerable number of persons, who have written only occasional or quite unimportant articles for the Icelandic journals, and some authors of works yet unprinted. The number remaining is still astonishingly large for a population of less than The arrangement of the names in the list is that proper 75,000. in treating most Icelandic personal cognomens, namely under the Christian name, which is the important one-Arnljótur Ólafsson, for instance, being simply Arnljátur, the son of Ólafur.
