A FASHIONABLE NOVEL

ED HARRY has written a novel, story of elegant life;

stuff about love in a hovel,

To sketch of a commoner's wife: trash such as pathos and passion, ine feelings, expression, and wit; all about people of fashion,

ome look at his caps how they fit!

Radcliffe! thou once wert the charmer I girls who sat reading all night; heroes were striplings in armor, hy heroines damsels in white. past are thy terrible touches, ur lips in derision we curl,

ess we are told how a Duchess,

onversed with her cousin, the Earl.

now have each dialogue quite full

E titles

"I give you my word,

My lady, you're looking delightful."

"O dear, do you think so, my lord!" "You've heard of the marquis's marriage, The bride with her jewels new set, Four horses, new travelling carriage, And déjeuner à la fourchette."

Haut ton finds her privacy broken,

We trace all her ins and her outs; The very small talk that is spoken

By the very great people at routs; At Tenby Miss Jinks asks the loan of The book from the innkeeper's wife, And reads till she dreams she is one of The leaders of elegant life.

THOMAS HAYNES BAYLY

MY FAMILIAR

Ecce iterum Crispinus

GAIN I hear that creaking step!

He's rapping at the door!·

Do well I know the boding sound

That ushers in a bore.

do not tremble when I meet

The stoutest of my foes,

ut Heaven defend me from the friend

[blocks in formation]

e drops into my easy-chair,
And asks about the news;
e peers into my manuscript,
And gives his candid views;
e tells me where he likes the line,
And where he's forced to grieve;

e takes the strangest liberties,
But never takes his leave!

MY FAMILIAR

He reads my daily paper through
Before I've seen a word;

He scans the lyric (that I wrote)
And thinks it quite absurd;
He calmly smokes my last cigar,
And coolly asks for more;
He opens everything he sees
Except the entry door!

He talks about his fragile health,
And tells me of the pains

He suffers from a score of ills

Of which he ne'er complains;

And how he struggled once with death To keep the fiend at bay;

On themes like those away he goes,

But never goes away!

He tells me of the carping words
Some shallow critic wrote;
And every precious paragraph

Familiarly can quote;
