On this text is founded a young man's experience, during which he drifts into mining life, is buried for several days by an accident and learns many lessons from his fellow sufferers. The heroine appears at sixteen, a bright, happy girl in spite of the nerves and fault-finding of her cousin in whose house she has found a home and hard work. An American story of east and west.

Tanis, the sang-digger, is a poor girl of Virginia, who lives pretty much like a savage in the mountains, and ekes out an existence by digging the ginseng root. She is loved by a young giant of her own class, a mammoth brute, who exercises an almost irresistible spell over her. Her battle against the passion and tyranny of this man is the motive of the story. The story is mostly told in dialect.

Clinton Ross says: "The persons and personages who figure in this little volume are as I suppose them to have been. Two of the persons individualized are characters entirely imaginary, and the others are in that twilight land of the fancy where fact and romance meet." The chapters are entitled: On imaginary portraits; Wolfe; The first Lord Fenwold; Talleyrand. Rouse, Lydia L. Only Judith. N. Y., Hunt & Eaton, 1893. c. 3-231 p. il. D. cl., 85 c.

Judith Melville, overhearing an uncle's carelessly expressed and unwise reference to herself, is led to compare the treatment of her sister and herself by her parents, and to form a rather unjust conclusion, in consequence of which she becomes a child with a grievance. The story tells how she was brought to consider things in a less morbid way, and how her mother was brought to a realization of her unfulfilled obligations. There is a moral for both parents and

children.

Russell, A. P. Sub-colum: a sky-built human world. Bost., Houghton, Mifflin & Co., 1893. 3-267 p. D. cl., $1.25.

A picture of an ideal society, a Utopia, which is neither visionary nor fantastic. The ideal society has become gradually what it is, not by legislation nor by mere improvement in modes of living, but by individual development of intellect and heart, guided and promoted by the controlling influences of the community. The highest regard is shown not to wealth but to goodness, not to material success but to brotherly kindness and unselfish devotion to the common weal. Education is very thorough but eminently practical, and the universities have professors of common sense. Physicians, lawyers and ministers work in harmony to repress all that is ignoble and to foster every capacity and impulse for excellence. Cooks rank among savants, and both cooking and eating are fine arts. The religion of this community consists in a life of love, fruitful of those exalted graces which characterized the life of Christ.

It points out the danger of orthodoxy weakening, tolerating and yielding, and calls upon Christians to fight for their doctrines. Three articles have political tendencies.

The sturdy and conscientious manliness with which Paul decided all questions, his true and helpful friendship with his school and college room-mate, together with the story of the home life of his mother, brother and sister, make a story of great interest.

Yonge, Charlotte M. The treasures in the marshes; il. by W. S. Stacey. N. Y., T: Whittaker, [1893.] 5+191 p. il. D. cl., $1. While Walter Bulfinch was hunting plover's eggs in the marshes of North Lychford, he unearthed some ancient coins, a fragment of a golden cup, and an antique golden torque. Chris Chrediton, a cousin of Walter, who was digging in the Black Mead of South Lychford, discovers about the same time some coins, which were believed by archaeologists to date from the time of the Saxon kings. These incidents in the lives of Walter and Chris influence them to different courses of action, and are the means of bringing about the changes described in a story which tells also of the final disposition of the treasures.
