Of all his works, Professor John David Michaelis brought the greatest power of his mind into play in the compilation of his "Commentary on the Laws of Moses," a book, in its way, of equal authority, and much in the style of Montesquieu's "Spirit of the Law."

la même, traduite avec des Notes nouvelles par J. J. Chenevrière; 4 vols. 8vo. sewed, 10s. Geneve, 1822 Few Theological works have enjoyed a greater European reputation than the "Introduction to the New Testament," familiar to most English readers in Bishop Marsh's translation, which, however, does not wholly supersede the fourth edition of the original, published in 1788, as the Bishop would appear to have made use of the second edition with the "Zusaetze" only to the third.

MICHAELIS (Johann David) Chrestomathia Syriaca; vide No.
2818; Grammatica Syriaca, Nos. 2819-20.

John David Michaelis, whose works are chiefly designed to clear up the
difficulties attending the study of the Sacred Writings, died at Goettingen in
1791, where he filled the professor's chair with so much credit as to raise the
fame of the recently established University of Georgia Augusta much higher
than that enjoyed by her elder sisters of Leipzig, Jena, Heidelberg, or
Erfurt, and which she has ever since retained.

Lipsia, 1699 Micraelius' book is particularly curious as a depository of the earlier squabbles and disputes amongst Protestants, which, by universal consent, had apparently been buried in oblivion. The author, who was a most painstaking and learned man, was Divinity Professor at Stettin.
