In the "Ecclesiastical History of the Saxons" Bede includes the general history of his own time, and in the minor pieces introduces us, as it were, within the walls of those most interesting societies, the Monasteries of the Saxon period. "The Lives of St. Cuthbert, and of the Abbots of Weremouth and Jarrow are as graphic as the writings of De Foe, which they rival in the simplicity of the narrative of the daily life of the monks, and the introduction of many useful arts into England; and record, amongst other things, the substitution of the Roman Missal for the Mozarabic, which had been used in Britain up to that period. The "Letter to Bishop Egbert" is a deplorable record of the demoralized state of Monachism in the eighth century. "The Account of the seven Wonders of the World," and "The Book of the Holy Places," the latter particularly, are wonderful productions of that period, the accuracy of which is attested by the author of Eothen," and other modern travellers.
