Mr. Prescott does not appear to have known of the existence of M. Lanz's publication, which therefore affords all but untrodden ground to the future historian of the reign of Charles V. Of the labours of M. Gachard he says: "They are devoted to the letters of the Emperor and his household, and place at the disposition of the future biographer of Charles, the original materials with which to construct the history of his latter days and his convent life, by which I have not failed to profit."PRESCOTT'S Robertson's Charles V.

1847-8

Idem liber; 2 vols. in 1, 4to. hf. bd. calf, 15s. Simon Massa and Marcus Fuchs, both natives of Kronstadt, who held respectively in that city the office of Pastor Primarius, the first from 15911605, and the other from 1605-1619, were during those periods occupied in the compilation of this curious Transylvanian chronicle. The chronicle of Christian Lupinus and John Oltard extend, the one from 1597–1612, and the other from 1617-1630. These papers were to have formed the fourth volume of Schwandtner's Collection of Hungarian Historians, printed at Vienna in 1746-8, but death prevented the completion of that series. The additions of Andreas Gunesch are carried on from 1663 to 1669; and John Ziegler, who died in 1743, brought the history down to the year 1700. Thus for upwards of a century these annals are the records of eyewitnesses; and the entire work, which consists of 631 pages, only devotes 84 pages to the history of Hungary prior to 1590. Each volume is accompanied by a general index.

"Bernard Connor's Evangelium Medici' awakened some attention at the time of its publication, and drew down many suspicions of infidelity on its author. I have not thought it worth while to master the book, but, on a slight acquaintance, my impression is that these charges against the author are without any ground. The book bears on the present part of our subject (the Miracles and Nature.)"-DEAN TRENCH.
