Cyprian and Firmilian are early types that the Catholicity of the Church was admitted to exist in its several subdivisions, without being subject to one visible head upon earth. "The force of these passages of St. Cyprian and Firmilian is greatly increased, when it is remembered how they acted in respect of the successor of St. Peter, the Bishop of the Roman See. only did they differ with him strongly and pointedly, but they persevered in this difference to the length of incurring his excommunication. Nor even when excommunicated did they seem to entertain any uneasiness or fear lest separation from Rome should have cut them off from the body of Christ, or disproved the legitimacy of their succession from the Apostles. On the contrary, they rely on the Scriptures and the Apostolic tradition of truth, and reply to the sentence of Pope Stephen by saying, "He is the true schismatic who has made himself an apostate from the Communion of Ecclesiastical unity. And while thou thinkest that all men can be excommunicated by thee, thou hast only excommunicated thyself from all.”— DR. MOBERLY.
