LONDON:

BRADBURY AND EVANS, PRINTERS, WHITEFRIARS.

TO MADAME OTTO GOLDSCHMIDT,

NEE JENNY LIND.

DEAR FRIEND,

I dedicate to you this volume of Pilgrimages to the Shrines of British Worthies. England is the land of your affection, as it is of your respect; and I know it will gratify you to peruse the records of illustrious men and women who have been good as well as great, and whose lives were lessons in practical wisdom and active virtue.

I rejoice in the opportunity thus afforded me of expressing not only the high estimation in which I hold your genius-of which society is cognisant in but one of its many phases-but my joy and admiration that the pure womanliness of your nature has preserved you uninjured by the world's homage.

Dear friend, accept this tribute to those rare qualities of heart and mind which your friend and "neighbour" has had so many happy opportunities of observing; were I to enlarge upon this theme, I should fail to say all I feel, though you would say I flattered.

Ever your attached friend,

ANNA MARIA HALL.

August 1, 1853.
