35.

Ps. cxxi. (Richmond.)

1 To Zion's hill 1 lift my eyes, From thence expecting aid; To Zion's hill, and Zion's God,

Who heaven and earth has made.

2 Then thou, my soul, in safety rest,
Thy guardian will not sleep;
His watchful care that Israel guards,
Will all his servants keep.

3 Sheltered beneath th' Almighty's wings, Thou shalt securely rest,

Where neither sun nor moon shall thee
By day or night molest.

4 At home, abroad, in peace, in war,
Thy God shall thee defend;
Conduct thee through life's pilgrimage
Safe to thy journey's end.

36. Ps. cxxxvii. (Waldensia.)

1 Where Babel's stream flows down,
We sat a conquered host:
We wept to think upon
Our land in ruins thrown-
Zion, the loved, the lost.

*

2 Our proud, reproachful foes
Exulted o'er our wrongs,
And, reckless of our woes,
The unfeeling cry arose

66

Sing one of Zion's songs."

3 Our silent harps were hung
Upon the willow tree:

How could their chords be strung,
Or Zion's hymns be sung
In heathen slavery?

4 O loved Jerusalem,

Where grace and mercy shone!
Ere we forget thy name,

Our lips be closed in shame,-
Our hands a withered bone.

5 Daughter of Babylon
Thy lot shall be as ours!
When all thy glory's gone,
The Lord shall rear his throne
Mid Zion's heaven-like towers.

HYMNS.

37.

ADVENT. (Carey's)

1 O judge of all! O God most high!
To Thee we raise our feeble cry;
Regard, nor let thy suppliants die!
Our sins are great, our fears prevail;
Our faith is weak, our foes assail;
Our time is short, our spirits fail.

2 With faltering tongues, one boon we crave, Let us not sink into the grave

Till we have felt thy power to save.
When life's delusive dream is past;
And man's eternal lot is cast;

Sinile on our trembling souls at last!

3 0, when thy voice shall wake the dead, And thrill the scoffer's heart with dread, While thunders burst around his head; When Thou shall light the funeral pyre Of vanquished death,-a world on fire,And earth shall in the blaze expire:

4 O, in that last, that dreadful day
Of wrath, and anguish, and dismay,
The banner of thy love display,
We have no hope but in thy grace;
Give us at thy right hand a place,
When we shall see Thee face to face!

ADVENT. (Helmsley.)

Lo! he comes with clouds descending,
Once for favoured sinners slain !
Thousand thousand saints attending,
Swell the triumph of his train,
Hallelujah! Jesus comes, and comes to reign.
2 Every eye shall now behold Him
Robed in dreadful majesty !

Those who set at nought and sold Him,
Pierced and nailed Him to the tree,

Deeply wailing, shall the true Messiah see.
3 Hail redemption, long expected!

Christians, see your Lord draw near!
All his saints by man rejected,

Now shall meet Him in the air.

Hallelujah! see the day of God appear. 4 Yea, Amen! let all adore Thee, .High on thine eternal throne!

Saviour, take the power and glory;

Make thy righteous sentence known!

Lord Almighty! claim the kingdom for thine own.

39. ADVENT. (Passing Bell.)

1 He comes! he comes! the Judge severe ! The seventh trumpet speaks him near! His lightnings flash, his thunders roll; How welcome to the ransomed soul!

2 Descending on his azure throne,
He claims the kingdom for his own;
The kingdoms all obey his word,
And hail Him their triumphant Lord.

3 Shout, all ye hosts above the sky,
And all the saints of God most high;
Your Lord, who now his right obtains,
For ever and for ever reigns!

40.

ADVENT. (Luther's Hymn.)

1 Great God what do I see and hear?
The end of things created.

The Judge of mankind doth appear,
On clouds of glory seated.

The trumpet sounds, the graves restore
The dead which they contained before!
Prepare my soul to meet Him.
