Ainsi dans une mutuelle accusation, ADAM dépensaient les heures infructueuses; mais ni l'un ni l'autre ne se condamnant soi-même, à leur vaine dispute il semblait n'y avoir point de fin.

MAN's transgression known, the guardian-angels forsake Paradise, and return up to heaven to approve their vigilance, and are approved; God declaring that the entrance of Satan could not be by them prevented. He sends his Son to judge the transgressours; who descends and gives sentence accordingly; then in pity clothes them both, and reascends. Sin and Death, sitting till then at the gates of hell, by wondrous sympathy feeling the success of Satan in this new world, and the sin by man there committed, resolve to sit no longer confined in hell, but to follow Satan their sire up to the place of man: to make the way easier from hell to this world to and fro, they pave a broad highway or bridge over Chaos, according to the track that Satan first made; then, preparing for earth, they meet him, proud of his success, returning to hell; their mutual gratulation. Satan arrives at Pandæmonium; in full assembly relates with boasting his success against man; instead of applause is entertained with a general hiss by all his audience, transformed with himself also suddenly into serpents, according to his doom given in Paradise; then, deluded with a show of the forbidden tree springing up before them, they, greedily reaching to take of the fruit, chew dust and bitter ashes. The proceedings of Sin and Death; God foretels the final victory of his Son over them, and the renewing of all things; but for the present commands his angels to make several alterations in the heavens and elements. Adam, more and more perceiving his fallen condition, heavily bewails, rejects the condolement of Eve; she persists, and at length appeases him: then, to evade the curse likely to fall on their offspring, proposes to Adam violent ways, which he approves not; but, conceiving better hope, puts her in mind of the late promise made them, that her seed should be revenged on the serpent; and exhorts her with him to seek peace of the offended Deity by repentance and supplication.

La transgression de l'homme étant connue, les Anges de garde quittent le Paradis et retournent au ciel pour justifier leur vigilance; ils sont approuvés, Dieu déclarant que l'entrée de Satan n'a pu être prévenue par eux. Dieu envoie son Fils pour juger les transgresseurs; il descend et prononce conformément la sentence. Alors il en a pitié, les vêtit tous deux et remonte vers son Père. Le PÉCHÉ et la MORT, assis jusqu'alors aux portes de l'Enfer, par une merveilleuse sympathie, sentant le succès de SATAN dans ce nouveau monde, et la faute que l'homme y a commise, se résolvent de ne pas rester plus long-temps confinés dans l'Enfer et de suivre Satan, leur Père, dans la demeure de l'homme. Pour faire une route plus commode pour aller et venir de l'Enfer à ce monde, ils pavent çà et là un large grand chemin ou un pont au-dessus du Chaos en suivant la première trace de Satan. Ensuite se préparant à gagner la terre, ils le rencontrent, fier de son succès, revenant à l'Enfer. Leurs mutuelles félicitations. SATAN arrive à Pandaemonium. Il raconte avec jactance en pleine assemblée son succès sur l'homme. Au lieu d'applaudissemens il est accueilli par un sifflement général de tout son auditoire, transformé tout à coup, ainsi que lui-même, en serpens, selon sa sentence prononcée dans le Paradis. Alors trompés par une apparence de l'arbre défendu qui s'élève devant eux, ils cherchent avidement à atteindre le fruit et mâchent de la poussière et des cendres amères. Progrès du Péché et de la Mort. Dieu prédit la victoire finale de son Fils sur eux et le renouvellement de toutes choses; mais pour le moment il ordonne à ses Anges de faire divers changemens dans les Cieux et les Élémens. Adam apercevant de plus en plus sa condition dégradée, se lamente tristement, et rejette la consolation d'Ève. Elle persiste, et l'apaise à la fin. Alors pour empêcher la malédiction de tomber probablement sur leur postérité, elle propose à Adam des moyens violens, qu'il n'approuve pas. Mais concevant une meilleure espérance, il lui rappelle la dernière promesse qui leur fut faite, que sa race se vengera du serpent, et il l'exhorte à chercher avec lui la reconciliation de la Divinité offensée par le repentir et la prière.

Whatever wiles of foe or seeming friend.

For still they knew, and ought to have still remember'd,
The high injunction not to taste that fruit,
Whoever tempted; which they not obeying,
Incurr'd (what could they less?) the penalty;
And, manifold in sin, deserved to fall.

Cependant l'action haineuse et méchante, que Satan avait faite dans Éden, était connue du ciel; on savait comment dans le serpent il avait séduit ÈVE, elle son mari et l'avait engagé à goûter le fruit fatal. Car. qui peut échapper à l'œil de DIEU qui voit tout, ou tromper son esprit qui sait tout? Sage et juste, en toutes choses, l'Éternel n'empêcha point SATAN de tenter l'esprit de l'homme armé d'une force entière et d'une volonté libre, parfaites pour découvrir et repousser les ruses d'un ennemi ou d'un faux ami. Car ADAM et ÈVE connaissaient et devaient toujours se rappeler l'importante injonction de ne jamais toucher au fruit, qui que ce fût qui les tentât. N'obéissant pas, ils encoururent la peine: que pouvaient-ils attendre de moins? La complication de leur péché méritait leur chute.
