by one, the loved and honored veterans of the rebellion are passing away; and in the years to come, when, like their comrades, who have fallen before them, they shall sleep beneath the sod and the dew, with the silent stars keeping their strange vigil above them, that monument would stand to commemorate their lives, and to honor their last resting place.

In closing, I am sure I breathe the sentiments of every true American heart, when I say, so long as the Stars and Stripes shall wave over a free people, which pray God shall ever be, so long let the lives and the memories of the Nation's dead be commemorated upon the anniversaries of this day. Thus the sublime lesson of the rebellion will be kept forever fresh in the minds of the coming generations; the Nation's honor will never again be tarnished, nor its power be diminished, and the fair sun of our Republic will grow brighter and brighter until the judgment day. Let us teach our children the duties of patriotic citizens; teach them to weave the garland and to drop the tear; teach them, that they may teach their children, that the proudest words they can say are, "I am an American citizen!''

EXTRACT FROM AN ADDRESS BEFORE

THE SOUTH DAKOTA INDUSTRIAL

COLLEGE.

To my mind, the industrial schools and colleges of this country, such institutions as this, which prepare young men and women for the industrial pursuits of life, a large proportion of whose alumni will work out their destiny, and find their life work in the field of manual industry, upon the farm and in the workshop, have it in their power to do more to effect an honest and correct settlement of the great questions, which are agitating the public mind, and, seemingly, threatening the Nation's progress, if not its existence, than any, or indeed, I might well say, all the other great influences at work in the Nation, in the same direction. Take the alleged irrepressible conflict between labor and capital.

I do not believe it necessary to labor with this class, or with this audience, to demonstrate that there is no real, or necessary conflict between these two great forces, but that, as a matter of fact, their interests are identical.

By this, I do not mean that capital is not often oppressive and tyrannical, nor that labor is always reasonable and intelligent, but simply, that the best
