PREFACE.

In the following pages, which are intended for those persons of the male sex who have not had the advantages of education beyond the mere elementary steps, I have touched upon subjects which may induce the reader to pursue inquiry and study respecting them, from the hints here suggested to his mind.

In treating of some matters I have been obliged to employ the terms of Art which are proper to those subjects, and which alone can rightly explain them.

In such instances the reader must consult a Dictionary, which is as necessary to any one in search of bookknowledge as the implements of his craft are to a mechanic.

Wherever my own experience or information have been insufficient, I have freely availed myself of the most competent authorities, so as to render, according to the design of the Publishers, this unpretending volume one of the many sent forth for the purpose of affording useful and practical information.

MARTIN DOYLE.
