50 pp. of writing and 48 blank leaves, ruled throughout in

A MOST INTERESTING MANUSCRIPT, APPARENTLY UNPUBLISHED, WRITTEN AND BOUND FOR AND PRESENTED TO KING EDWARD VI on the development of his fatal disease. It begins with a table of contents, amongst which is a chapter entitled "Myne opinyon according to lerned authoritie of Auncient Authores of Guaicum; that wolde to God my body could labour, or my Hart could thynke that thinge that myght do yr. moste excellent Mate Good," etc. This is subscribed "By y". Graces moste bownden humble subiecte and Dayly Oratour Walt Cromer." The text begins "Theis bey the Sainges of Authoritie gathered by me of the Olde & Auncient Authoures of Physike and Surgerie to ornate and sett forth the Barbers Hall according to the originall beginning," etc.

Of the author little seems to be known, but that he was a physician of considerable distinction is shown from a reference to him among the State Papers at the Record Office (quoted here from The Annals of the Barber-Surgeons of London, by Sidney Young, 1890): "19th January, 1530. A letter from De Augustinis, written from the palace at Esher, to Cromwell, desires that Dr. Butts [who had the best practice of any physician of his time, and was a personal friend of King Henry VIII] or Dr. Walter Cromer may be sent to the Cardinal

A REMARKABLY FINE ROYAL BINDING, in wonderful preservation. It
is of dark blue morocco, the backs and sides covered with semis of
fleurs-de-lis, roses, and bees or flies, with King Charles I's arms in
centres, gilt edges. Few bindings from the royal library to equal
this, both as regards artistic value and state of preservation, can now
be in existence.

A MOST INTERESTING VOLUME, having originally belonged to the Claypoole or Claypole family, one of the last descendants of which married PROTECTOR OLIVER CROMWELL'S SECOND DAUGHTER. It contains the whole pedigree of the family from James Claypoole, born at Kings Cliufe in Northampton, who purchased the manor of Northborough, "which house formerly was Jeffrey Chaucer's" to 1655, at which period Richard Claypoole has written an account of the family in the flyleaves. There are several original autographs of a member of the family in different pages of the text, with marginal notes shewing that it had been the constant study of the successive owners. A page in the Psalter has" In the Lord is all my trust, Rich. Claypoole, 1628"; at the end of Ecclesiastes, "Richard Claypoole, his booke, October 29, 1630; at the end of the Prophecy of Ezekiel, "O Lord have mercy uppon the soule of Richard Claypoole and grant that his soule may live ever in joy everlastinge, May 28, 1597"; at the end of Malachy, "Richard Claypoole, hunc librum possi. deo ex dono meii matris, 1614 and inlaid in the end cover is the inscription, "Cromwell Clapoole dyed at London, May 13, anno 1678, and was buryed at Norborow;

Copies of the First Book of Common Prayer are becoming increasingly difficult to obtain. The above is one of the earliest of the several issues or editions which were published in 1549.

COLLATION: A10, A-P, Q, R-T8, V10. The first ten leaves are unnumbered, then follow 157 leaves numbered i-clvii (cxlvi is numbered in error cxxvi) and an unnumbered leaf containing the order concerning the price of the book. This order is as follows: "The Kinges Maiestie, by the aduyse of his moste deare vncle the Lorde Protector and other his highnes Counsell, streightly chargeth and commaundeth, that no maner of person do sell this present booke vnbounde, aboue the price of, ii Shyllynges & ii. pence the piece. And the same bounde in paste or in boordes, not aboue the price of three shyllynges and. viii. pence the piece. God saue the King."

another issue of the same. Sm. folio, the titlepage mended and remargined, one corner of the ornamental border being supplied in facsimile; the blank margins of several leaves neatly repaired, and the last leaf, stating the original price of the book, inlaid; otherwise a quite perfect and clean copy; purple morocco extra, gilt edges, with the bookplate of John Naylor E. Whitchurche, 16 June, 1549 105 0 0 An exact reprint of the May issue, described above, with the substitution of "Junij" for "Maij" on the title, and ".xvi. daye of Iune" for "fourth daye of Maye" in the colophon. In the order as to the price, "aduise" is printed instead of "aduyse ", after the word "bordes" is added "couered with calues leather," and the price is altered to ".iiii. Shillinges." The collation of the two issues is identical.

Sm. folio, black letter, 160 leaves, with ornamental woodcut initials; a very small hole in the titlepage and a plain corner off one leaf; some writing in an eighteenth century hand on the bottom margin of the title and on the last leaf; a very fine, sound copy in an early eighteenth century calf binding E. Whitchurch, 1552 160 00 EXTREMELY RARE. The several issues of the second Prayer Book of Edward VI are probably even rarer than those of the first. This must be one of the finest copies in existence of this issue. It seems to be Lowndes' second, though it has sixteen preliminary leaves (including "An Acte for the vniformitie of common prayer, and administracion of the Sacramentes," 2 leaves) not fourteen.

This second edition of the Prayer Book, which was brought out by the desire of the King himself, influenced by the Genevan reformers, contained many changes more markedly Protestant. Vestments, except the surplice for priests and deacons, and the rochette for bishops, were disallowed. The word "Mass" was deleted, the word "altar" changed to "table", "Mattens and Evensong to "Morning and Evening Prayer," and "priest" to "minister," though not invariably so.
