202 DÜRER. Catalogue of the Engraved Work of Albert Dürer.
prints arranged in the order of their execution. By CHARLES H.
MIDDLETON-WAKE. 8vo., bds.
Cambridge, 1893 0 5 0

This is the first attempt to arrange the prints in chronological order.
To arrange the impressions from Albert Dürer's metal plates in the order of their
execution, may not seem a very difficult task, since the master has himself affixed the
date to so many of his compositions; and yet to decide absolutely on the proper
sequence, even of those on which the year is engraved, is not quite so simple a matter
as it may at first appear, while the relative position of the undated prints, i.e., of 44 of
the 108 which are entered in Bartsch's Descriptive Catalogue, can only be ascertained
by careful and systematic comparison.

This splendid series of plates contains the most accurate reproductions of Raphael's masterpieces of decoration in existence. Executed more than a hundred years since, when the paintings were still in a good state of preservation, it is of greater value than the result of any modern attempt to illustrate them in their present condition. Very few copies were executed in this beautiful manner.
