A SELECTION from the poems of Winthrop Mackworth Praed will probably be welcomed by many. Their author, as is well known, never collected or sifted his works with a view to their separate publication. It has remained for others to provide, so far as is possible, that nothing in the manner of presenting them to the world should narrow the circle of their readers. The first duty has been to authenticate the poems rightly attributed to Praed, and to reject the rest, by the issue of a complete edition. In so doing, it is hardly the province of an Editor, were it in his power, to exclude productions which have long passed out of the cognisance of a single judgment; more especially where old questions of disputed authorship remain for settlement. However, the admirers of Praed, in all or any of his humours, will now find their well-known favourites, as well as the less familiar |
