3404 CICERO (M. T.) CATO MAJOR, or his DISCOURSE OF OLD AGE, with Explanatory NOTES. Philadelphia, printed and sold by B. FRANKLIN, 1744. 8vo, a remarkable copy, THE EDGES BEING TOTALLY UNCUT AS ISSUED, in a specially designed binding of olive green morocco, the sides richly covered with a ground of gold dotted lines, corners of lilies inlaid in red, side tooled with flowing semi-circular design on rich dotted gold ground, inside silk linings, top edges gilt, by RIVIERE & SON (THIS EXCELLENT PIECE OF BINDING WAS EXPRESSLY DESIGNED FOR THIS COPY (see reproduction), £87

A fine example of this interesting volume, which Benjamin Franklin always took pride in, and looked upon it as the best production of his press. In concluding his address to the reader, Franklin says-"I shall add to these few lines my hearty wish that THIS FIRST TRANSLATION OF A CLASSIC IN THE WESTERN WORLD may be followed with many others performed with equal judgment and success; and be a happy omen that PHILADELPHIA SHALL BECOME THE SEAT OF THE AMERICAN MUSES.' The translation was the work of James Logan. The only other copy we know of being offered for sale in this country in recent years in uncut state like the above sold by auction for £87, unbound. The binding alone on the present copy cost over £17.

3405 CISTE MYSTICÆ.-SOME ACCOUNT OF SEVERAL CISTE MYSTICE lately found at LRÆNESTE, and particularly of one lately in the possession of Mr. Bynes, and now, 1789, in the Museum of Charles Townley, Esq., also of a Testamentary Inscription. (1789.) Folio, a plainly written manuscript of twenty-eight pages, and two engraved folding plates, placed in an old English red morocco cover of about 1750, which is an unusually magnificent specimen of the so-called "Cottage" binding at the time of its highest artistic development, the sides and roof are composed of two gilt lines, and edged by a pointillé line, the roofs at top and bottom are surmounted by a border consisting of broad oblong blocks, the outer space between sides and border is filled in with urns showing pointillé leafy branches, with flowers blooming, the interior of "cottage" contains pointillé scroll triangular corners and a large oval made up principally with flral pointillé work, and ending at top and bottom with tulip and at sides with urn and flowering plants, the side is bordered with narrow roll tooling (see reproduction), £15 158
