A portion only of the first volume of this Collection has been used by Dr. Dibdin in his new edition. The remainder has not been used by any Bibliographer. "A classical work upon universal literature, the completion of which has fully answered the high expectations formed at the publication of the first volume."

Horne.

"The honour of first accomplishing a comprehensive synopsis of literary history in a more regular form, was the reward of Andres, a Spanish Jesuit, who, after the dissolution of his order, passed the remainder of his life in Italy. This work is an extraordinary performance, embracing both ancient and modern literature in its full extent, and, in many parts, with little assistance from any former publication of the kind. It is far better known on the Continent than in England, where I have not frequently seen it quoted; nor do I believe it is common in our private libraries."-Hallam. - Origen, Progressos, y estado actual de toda la literatura, 8 vols. royal 8vo. hf. bd. calf, £1. 8s Madrid, 1784

This Spanish translation is made by the brother of the author, and has some additions respecting Spanish Literature.

"I exhort the reader to seize hold of a work (whenever it comes across him-which will be rarely) entitled Bibliotheca Librorum Rariorum Universalis, by J. J. Bauer. "There is good reason to suppose that Milton threw many additions and corrections in the Theatrum Poetarum, a book published by his nephew, Edward Phillips, in 1673. It contains criticisms far above the taste of that period. Among these is the judgment on Shakspeare, which was not then, I believe, the general opinion; and which perfectly coincides both with the sentiments and words of Milton in L'Allegro; 'Or sweetest Shakspeare, Fancy's child,

Warble his native wood notes wild.""-Warton.
