"When thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues, and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of nien. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and, when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father •which is in secret; and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.

But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathens do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.

After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father, which art in heaven; hallowed be thy name.

SELECTED

FROM THE OLD AND NEW TESTAMENT, AND FROM THE APOCRYPHA.

Selected from Jeremiah, ch. 10. 20. 32.

Thou shewest lovingkindness unto thousands, and rucompensest the iniquity of the fathers

into the bosom of their children after them: the Great, the Mighty God, the Lord of hosts, is his name. Great in counsel, and mighty in work: for thine eyes are open upon all the ways of the sons of men: to give every one according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings. The Lord is the true God, he is the living God, and an everlasting king: at his wrath the earth shall tremble, and the nations shall not be able to abide his indignation. He hath made the earth by his power, he hath established the world by his wisdom, and hath stretched out the heavens by his discretion. When he uttereth his voice, there is a multitude of waters in the heavens, and he causeth the vapours to ascend from the ends of the earth; he maketh lightnings with rain, and bringeth forth the wind out of his treasures. Sing unto the Lord, praise ye the Lord: for he halh delivered the soul of the poor from the hand of evil doers.

A Prayer of Solomon, Book of Wisdom, 9.

O God of my fathers, and Lord of mercy, who hast made all things with thy word, and ordained man through thy wisdom, that he should have
