In the midst of those who hate us,
We must be while here below.
But thy presence

Cheers us when opprest with woe.

Precious is thy word of promise,
Precious to thy people here;
Never take thy presence from us,
Jesus, Saviour, still be near.
Living, dying,

May thy name our spirits cheer.

CCXXII.

"Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief."
Mark ix. 24.

BEGONE, unbelief, my Jesus is near,
And for my relief will surely appear;
By prayer let me wrestle, and he will perform
With Christ in the vessel, I smile at the storm.

Though dark be my way, since he is my guide, "Tis mine to obey, and he will provide; Though cisterns be broken, and creatures all

fail

The word he has spoken shall surely prevail.

His love in time past forbids me to think
He'll leave me at last in trouble to sink;

He would not have taught me to trust in his

name,

And thus far have brought me to put me to shame.

Why should I complain of want or distress,
Temptation or pain? He told me no less.
The heirs of salvation, I know from his word,
Through much tribulation must follow their
Lord.

How bitter that cup, no heart can conceive, Which Jesus drank up, that sinners might live;

His way was much darker and rougher than mine:

Did Christ, my Lord, suffer, and shall I repine?

Since all that I meet shall work for my good, The bitter is sweet, the medicine is food; Though painful at present, 'twill cease before long;

And then, oh, how pleasant the conqueror's song.

CCXXIII.

Psalm. xci.

INCARNATE God! the soul that knows
Thy name's mysterious pow'r,
Shall dwell in undisturb'd repose,
Nor fear the trying hour.

Thy wisdom, faithfulness, and love,
To feeble, helpless worms,
A buckler and a refuge prove
From enemies and storms.

Angels, unseen, attend the saints,
And bear them in their arms,
To cheer the spirit when it faints,
And guard their life from harms.

The angels' Lord himself is nigh
To them that love his name;
Ready to save them when they cry,
And put their foes to shame.

Crosses and changes are their lot,
Long as they sojourn here;
But since their Saviour changes not,
What have the saints to fear.

CCXXIV.

The joy of the Lord is your strength."-Neh. viii. 10. Joy is a fruit that will not grow

In nature's barren soil:

All we can boast, till Christ we know,
Is vanity and toil.

But where the Lord has planted grace,
And made his glories known,
There fruits of heavenly joy and peace
Are found, and there alone.

A bleeding Saviour seen by faith,
A sense of pard'ning love,
A hope that triumphs over death,
Give joys like those above.

To take a glimpse within the veil,
To know that God is mine,
Are springs of joy that never fail,
Unspeakable! divine!

These are the joys which satisfy,

And sanctify the mind;

Which make the spirit mount on high,
And leave the world behind.

Y

No more, believers, mourn your lot;
But if you are the Lord's,
Resign to those who know him not
Such joys as earth affords.

CCXXV.

"A man shall be as the shadow of a great rock in a weary land."-Isaiah xxxii. 2.

Rock of ages, cleft for me,

May I hide myself in thee,
May the water and the blood,

From thy river side which flowed,
Be of sin the double cure,

Cleanse me from its guilt and power.

Not the labours of my hands
Can fulfil thy laws demands;
Could my zeal no respite'know,
Could my tears for ever flow;
All for sin could not atone,
Thou must save, and thou alone.

Nothing in my hands I bring,
Simply to thy cross I cling,
Naked come to thee for dress,
Helpless, Lord, to thee for grace;
Vile I to the mountain fountain fly,
Wash me, Saviour, or I die,
